so I broke "the belt"

This is purely for my curiosity...if he wants to up the power, what about shaving the head and increasing compression ratio a bit? Would you need a adjustable cam shaft pulley, or does it matter?
I'm a student trying to graduate soon, so I haven't had time to take care of my early '85. But when I start work on it again, this is something I'd like if possible...
and on a similar note, what about euro pistons. I can't find those anywhere!

but, yeah, why not? and what was that about a 3.0L crank ...

balance shaft belt is ripped, how much trouble am I in? cover is off and it looks like that's the belt that's got ripped up and timing belt might be ok

If the timing belt was OK, your'e fine. But didn't you say the car stalled at idle and wouldn't re-fire? If so, yes...it COULD be something else, but the timing is a bit too suspicious. It's entirely possible that your balance shaft belt got caught in a cam belt pulley and the cam belt, while still being physically in the right place, has had all of the teeth ripped off of it. In which case, you still bent valves.
Keep tearing it down.

actually, the teeth are not stripped anywhere
see, when looking down from top it looked like bottom part of timing belt was hanging out
now the balance shaft belt is off, and it's just ripped in 1 place, that's all
so what we thought of trying is, instead of digging in - order the tools needed for timing belt job, order new belts and rollers (Paragon Products kit)
change the rollers and belts, and try to fire up the car, if it works and there is knocking/clunking - obviously something else is bad; if not, then take the chance
car turned over, but didn't start; had that problem before though; almost acts like it's out of gas

as you see that's the belt and thats one point where it ripped, wonder why?
the teeth aren't beat up or anything, but it is a little greasy/dirty (obviously)
maybe a seized roller or something? should they all move freely or not?
any opinions, pointers, suggestions now?
thanks!

right now trying to move alternator, is it supposed to go up or down? can't figure it out, it won't move, yet
tried a rubber hammer and it hasn't broken loose yet
also, right under the airbox, there is a hose , and underneath there are 2 wires that plug into a fitting on that hose; one of those wires on my car was NOT connected; not sure where or what that hose does, my dad thinks its fuel connected, but - yeah, any idea? we plugged it in "just to be sure/safe"

got the belts off
found something else: right above the sway bar in front, where steering column connects, there are 2 rubber boots, for left side, and right side
one is torn
what are these called and what will it run?

*sigh*
my dad already took the belt off
I'll try to take a picture of that electrical connector a little later
now set the engine to TDC but I can't find that "opening" that Clark's Garage mentions; should take the piston route?
