well the P/O couldn't tell me when was the last time the tune up was done, or oil change, and things like that; so I took the car as it wa and drove it for 1 1/4 years, and it's been great fun;

so now it just seems that the car is tired and needs to be freshened up; this I'm sure is just a start; there were things wrong that got fixed: fans were not hooked up; rear bearings, I'm sure they were already going when I first got the car, but because of good brand new tires I coudln't hear them; torque tube coupler was clamped, and shatered - replaced with brand new OEM unit

pretty much I've been driving the car and waiting for it to stall out, or clutch to go, or transmission to go, or something to go wrong

I'm sure the front bearings need to be atleast looked at, at this point; I wouldn't be surprised if clutch was on it's way out; the fans still need work to work properly - other then on a high speed setting

so I got an idea of where to go with the car, but I'd like to "improve it" as I go along

I mean, I don't like to be car-less or anything, but I really don't mind spending money on this car and getting it fixed up/track etc ready

I'm sure I'll pick up something cheap to beat on in the next couple of months anyways

and I'm pretty sure it will need that lol

I just took it as it was and it's been great; my dad is very wary of touching the internals of the block because a "professional" should do this, but pro will also charge alot of $$$ for his skill, and I'm all for learning - if I can get the help to go along with it

definitly send the head to a professional to get worked on, but don't worry about anything else. The rest is easy.

I wouldn't even bother spending any money on machine work for the head. Pick up a decent used one, and throw it on.

This is the most important thing here. If you don't try and find out why it broke, you will replaying this game again. So I don't agree with the slap a new one and go.

You can do severe damage to the engine when it breaks, but that usually only happens when it breaks at high revs. You should be okay with just some bent valves. I would also replace the valve guides at this time, because they're probably due anyway.

Usually the waterpump seizes up, or doesn't spin properly. Since the timing belt turns that, if it stops turning, it will cause undue friction on the belt (which will cause it to break).

Of course, because of the backwards bend the belt takes over the waterpump pulley, after the belt becomes old and brittle (from time and heat cycles), the teeth can crack and sheer off.

It sounds like Roman's failure is of the more catastrophic kind... Something that failed to spin properly (could also be the tensioner or idler bearing.)

Not exactly advisable, but yeah...it ought to work.

Almost any used head you find is going to need valve guides. And if you don't get it decked, you're asking for problems later on.

On the other hand, if you enjoy replacing head gaskets, yeah...just throw one on.

I'm sure the belt snapped because it was just old, but again, holding my mouth shut because of my luck ...

waterpump? car was overheating slightly, but after fans were hooked up, it was fine, however - again, I do not have maintenance records for the car, so ...
