Default Had a bad day.

After 9000 miles, the belt was lost.

For the want of a belt, the timing was lost.

For the want of timing, the valves were lost.

For the want of the valves, compression was lost.

For the want of compression, the engine is lost.

For the want of an engine, my car is lost.

All for the want of a timing belt.

Ahh but the good news is ALL is not lost. You'll be up and running again soon.

Oh no

I will be back in Riverside tomorrow night and I'm done with class on Monday about 1PM. If you want another pair of hands to help with the car you know how close I am. I rebuilt my '85 motor about 2 years ago so I know what goes where

Old belt?

Did the water pump freeze and brake the belt?

Why did this happen?

I have no idea.

The P.O. replaced the timing belt and water pump 9k miles ago. But I think something must have frozen, because the highly reliable shop I took it to told me he found *pieces* of the timing belt all over. As in, it didn't so much "break" as "explode".

It was really quiet, too. One moment I was idling at a stoplight, the next it simply sputtered and died, no fuss.

I thought it was simply a stall.

Even when it wouldn't start again, I thought it was just the fuel pump. But the shop informs me I have zero compression on all cylinders.

This was the one thing I thought would not go wrong. When I purchased it about four months ago, the P.O. (a rennlister), informed me he had just done the timing belt and water pump, and I told myself, okay, that's one thing I won't have to worry about for a while yet.

*Sigh*.

Heh, if only. Six months ago, when I had clients to spare, I would have said, hell with it, let's take the opportunity, spend some money, and put in an LS1.

But with the current state of business, I'm afraid this is going to cause some financial pain even to fix, given that the shop quoted 1800 for labour, and over 2k for parts to do a rebuild.

Oh, wow. Thank you. I'm really grateful for the offer. But I'm afraid you overestimate my competence at wrench work. This car was supposed to be my learning experience; but to start with a project like this... I'd be useless.

I think I really will have to have this done professionally. I am so far out of my depth that the fish have lights on their noses.

But if anyone could tell me where I could purchase another engine in working condition, I'd be grateful indeed. I haven't been able to locate one.

It's really not that bad of a job. I'm not sure where $2k in parts is coming from either. You have about $350 worth of belts and gaskets and....what? The head? You can buy a decent one for $200 and put $350 in machine work and have a great one with new valve guide deals, etc. Be careful - it sounds like you're getting hosed.

buy another head, maybe just have the shop do a valvejob and clean the thing, machine the head a little bit and pop it on there. also with the head off youd be able to see if pistons were damaged at all. valves arent that difficult to do either if you have the right tools and a helper ()

if you want to attempt something yourself let me know.
