Joe Satriani-more than scales, less than he could be.
Steve Vai- frightening, pure terror.
Eric Johnson - Baron Von Tone, so smooth...
SRV - I just cant talk about this, maybe the greatest blues player ever.
Albert Collins - If you havent heard, he kicks ***
John Lee Hooker - I would pay a lot of money to have my vocal cords surgically changed to sound like John Lee.
Buddy Guy - Unbelievable guitar playing, on friggin fire.
BB King - Lucille and the King = happy face
Les Paul (he invented electric guitar, you might find his work impressive)
Robert Johnson - the root.
My little list of personal guitar heroes...in reverse order of time and influence.
I can wholeheartedly recommend the entire group, especially Buddy and BB. Thats real guitar, none of that silly pentatonic scale madness. I love Yngwie, but he is just a scale blazer.
Too bad I cant put my music dir. online, I have a pretty killer collection of guitar music.

damn, I never figured any of you for Steve vai/ Malmsteen fans~ 
I have a funny story about why I stopped (temporarily) playing guitar after meeting my GOD! (steve vai) I had the JEM 777 LNG and everything (#297 of 777 , and signed and #'ed by Mr. Vai himself in 1986)
I met STEVE at a local Guitar Center (other wise I would never go in one of those rip-off chain stores) . I waited in line for a little while and I was the only "young'n " there (17 @ the time) I was in TOTAL AWE. He shock my hand and smiled.
He said................
" GOOD LUCK " and winked at me.
I was all chocked up, and as a defualt, all I could reply with was
" you too!"
I could tell (visibly) that he was offended. I couldn't get back to see him or anything and walked away in a dazed state. I later sold that Jem for $1,650 ( I payed $2k
) and I gave the new owner the tab book of Passion and Warfare that I had him sign that day ........ That's when I stopped playin' guitar.
Im just now getting back into it though. Gonna pick up a nice PArker or PRS, and if I have the chance to meet any more of my Guitar GODS, I'll pass it

Steve Vai- I have seen him live, I was very frightened, he is a demon on guitar.
Eric Johnson - The Tones album is heavenly, I have seen him live too...OMG. Song: Cliffs of Dover

Luke, dont give up guitar man, I did for years and regretted it. When I broke my back, it saved my sanity to be able to play. Its so cool to have a place to go and play when your head isnt right. Get a beater acoustic and play blues, it heals the soul.
I have met many of my guitar heroes, they were all cool and down to earth, except for Ted Nugent. He was kinda a *****. I even saw SRV in a garage once in Oak Cliff in the early 70's.
I cant think of anything finer in all of existence than my 951 at speed, listening to Stevie or Buddy tear their souls out for me.
BB King also did a bunch of stuff with Van Morrison. Look for a song called " If You Love Me". Haha I could go on for hours about great guitar blues and rock.
I use DirectConnect and would love to share some blues. I have a fairly killer collection that grows all the time. I have over a gig of SRV alone, lots of live cuts and rare stuff. Also mucho Dave Matthews Band for anyone who likes that stuff. Email me for the screenname and server to find me on.

I used to have a live version of Cliffs of Dover from Austin City Limits that came with Guitar Player Magazine some years ago. OMG does not do this justice. Holy **** is more like it. Fan ever since as well as SRV, Joe S., etc.

You guys are killing me!! I used to play in a road band back in the 80's and we used to do some of that stuff. In one band we used to do Black Star and Heaven Tonight by Yngwie, a lot of Gary Moore stuff ( I still really love his playing), Satch Boogie by Satriani, and a lot of others that I cant remember right now. (Hell, I'll be 42 tomorrow!) In the 944's cd changer right now are Eric Johnson's "Ah Via Musicom", "Venus Isle", a live cd with Satriani, Vai, & Eric Johnson, a couple cd's by Greg Howe (he has an awesome technique!), Tony MacAlpine,Stevie Ray Vaughn (A moment of silence please for one the greatest) Carl Verheyen, and Steve Morse. I saw Morse with the Dregs at a small club in Columbus years ago and I still get shivers! I also saw Eric Johnson at Bogarts in Cincy right when "Venus Isle" came out. When he did "Manhattan" it was incredible. Listen to that one cranked up. After all this I'm going to have to get the Strat out if the closet and start working the rust out my fingers.( I can still play Cliffs of Dover!)

On a side note... A friend of mine played in a group that opened for Yngvie Malmsteen once. He told me that he was a self centered, stuck up a**hole. I was at that show and right in the middle of a song, Yngvie starts tuning his guitar.. AT FULL VOLUME!. I thought that was pretty crappy.
