I can get the two-piece (per side) air scoops for about $80. Good deal IF they really work. Alternative is the full fog light scoops and hoses.
I doubt anyone has scientific data, but any anecdotal info on the scoops.

Used the 968 style scoops on my 944 and my 951, both of which have seen track use. Never had problems with over heated brakes. My 944 had the same brake setup as the 951 however, so not exactly a direct comparison.
I doubt Porsche would have put them on the car if they didnt work, thats how i see it. Actual ducts with backing plates will probably be more effective however. My car is street / track which is why i want to keep the fog lights.

I don't know if the 968 scoops will fit an 84 without really modding it up. On my S2 I was able to bolt the uppers onto the strut mount with the factory holes. I fabbed something up for the a-arms (no 968 holes). I can't recall what the 8V cars' struts look like.

Trust the factory on this one. If you get out and get under a 951 with these scoops and a full OE batwing it all comes very clear, IMO. The bat wing scoops up on both outside trailing edges and perfectly feeds the lower deflector/diverter. The upper scoop is perfectly in line with an existing air tunnel as well. The lower deflector cools the outside of the rotor, the upper one cools closer to the hub.
Extremely efficient, although the lower deflector can get nicked now and then. But not so dear that they can't be swapped out every couple of years
Hard to say whether the feel-good hose drier rig actually pours more air on the rotor, but I have never heard of a person with the 968 diverters say they were not up to snuff and swap to aftermarket ducts.

I assume I can freely hack off parts of the dust shield to give access to the breeze. At this point, the shield cover the whole back side of the rotor. I can't even inspect the rotor for cracks, etc.

Just remove the dust sheild.
I ran without dust sheilds and the 951 scoops forever with no issues. Now I have the OG racing ducts with cooling hoses and backing plates (that take the place of dust sheilds). Never had a brake fade issues with the stock 951 set up, don't have one now either.

Looking at the 968, the backing plates looked to be the same as on the 951, meaning the lower scoop dosent actually cool the lower half of the rotor (unless you remove the shield). That was just taking a quick glimpse under my friends 968.. i could be wrong though.
I also had those backing plates removed one my n/a. Over 20k street miles like this (with the 4-piston Brembo calipers) and never had problems. That includes plenty of trips home in the snow that looked like this..

My 951 still has the dust shields on it, mainly because im too lazy to pull the hub off to remove them. I will be doing that this winter when i upgrade the front calipers to the 951S ones.
To mount the top scoop on non turbo / S2 front struts (That dont have the tabs) i made some very simple brackets using angle iron and secured them to the strut using hose clamps. Worked fine for me. No picture of it however.

Quick question. To remove dust shields, do I need to remove the hubs? I am lazy with a capital "L".
PS: My take on the 968 scoops was that the lower ones were to divert air up to the upper ones, and all the venting was done by the upper one.

Your right, the lower one diverts air to the top scoop. But with the dust shield off, it will also divert some air to the lower half of the rotor face aswell.
And yes, the hub must be removed to take off the dust shield. You can just cut them off if you want..but probably easier to just take the hub off.

I think you have to help replace a valve before you can change your calipers.

Like you, I wanted to change my calipers to 951S ones too. Proof there are two ways to get from A to B.

The new rotors i put on after i gave you the other set are actually pretty beat. They have about 10k miles on them with the Pagid pads you had on there.. they have developed a lip on the edge of them. The rears are shot also, alot of grooves starting to develop. Yet another winter project... $$$ (Doh!).

Jeez, that's even cheaper than when I gone mine a couple of months ago. Taking the dust shields/hubs off is easy....though I need to do it as well.
