As appealing as this concept is, you have to keep some stuff in mind:

> The solution needs to have mass appeal. If there are 1,000 buyers, the cost of design and production will be much lower than if there are 150 buyers.

> A $4,000 car is not the best home for a $7,000 engine. 924/944 owners are poor or cheap, so the solution should stay in the $3,000-$5,000 range. Rule out Audi 4.2 and Cayenne V6.

> Build on what exists. The Chevy small block package could be refined.

> Build on what exists. The basic 2.5 is a good engine. Why not focus on giving it a mild boost (e.g. Jackson Racing supercharger), with the necessary fueling enhancement. The best reason to pursue this is that it is NOT a swap. No adapters, no electronic nightmares. It works for the Miata; and the Jackson Racing / Miata kit has mass appeal. Lots of people have done it, and that makes it a marketable upgrade.

If I was going to put a japanese engine in my car I would at least want to build it with japanese parts. The large companies have a lot of money to throw at R&D and it really can help get the extra edge IMO. There's nothing wrong with the parts we make here, but a lot of them could be better. They are good value though.

If you're concerned about nissan RB series fitment, there's also the CA line. The CA's are identical to RB's just less two cylinders...

I'd be jelous if I saw an RB or SR motor in a 944. A KA24 motor seems to lack the reliability if the motor is old, but can be built well especially when turbocharged.

The CA motors from what I've gathered through friends' personal experiences, is that the dependabiltiy is very low, and the hp can be upped but not as greatly as the SR20det.

Regardless of which motor, I better see the rear tires on the car loosing more traction than gaining.

That's true, the CA is also iron, versus the aluminum of the SR. I also think the SR's aftermarket support is much greater, you can get nearly anything done to/for an SR without breaking the bank

well owning a porsche and doing engine swaps is not the best choice if you want to save money either.

with todays gas prices we should all drive 3cyl geo metros but that would't be cool would it.

I love the sound of a big engine. 4cyl and v6s are too boring for me if I was paying money and spending all that time doing an engine swap.

I would have to agree 100% with what Potomac said above...

It would be awesome to have a kit to go along with a motor or two that are

1) affordable
2) Have the ability to be modified, and get some good numbers
3) reliability

those who say will never ever never ever put a japanese engine in their porsche shouldn't influence your decision to stray away from them for good. that being said, the SR, or an F20 or F22 are great engines to start with!

i love my japanese car but there's a ton of good aftermarket shops here in the states. we have some world recordholders for engine builders and parts. not only japanese companies are capable of making good parts for japanese cars. don't think too lightly of stateside shops.

for example, the mitsu evo platform, AMS in Chicago holds world record for hp on the evo. their shop car's got 1100whp and does the 1/4 in 8.42 and they're improving themselves every couple of months.

it'll be a new term applied.

instead of "the wheels cost more than the car" it'll be "the engine costs more than the owner's soul"
