IIRC you need 26" of clearance.
I think that's what Haynes manual says.

...you have to lift it up super far. lol.
GL!

EDIT:
Answer is: >21"

Hmm.... 22" doesn't sound right, but I'll try to find the correct number for sure.

EDIT: Clarks Garage
The engine is removed from underneath the vehicle so at least 21 inches of clearance is required

So 22" is correct!

I jack mine up to 26" because I put a cart with wheels under the engine and roll it out.

Sorry about the confusion.

Ive pulled 2 motors from the top, not very hard IMO, just gotta remove the power steering pump. Ive never dropped one from the bottom though, next time!

I think out he bottom is easier.

BTW... you can use the engine hoist to lift the front of the car higher once the engine in the ground.
I usally do it with rear wheels on the ground.

bottom is definitely easier. What you do-

Raise it about 15" so you can get underneath and work on it. Once the engine is free, drop it to the ground on some cardboard. Remove the hoist and attach it to the upper front crossmember and raise the car. Slide the engine out on the cardboard.

I've done removals 3 different ways including the above method-
-The top was a major PITA- needed to remove alternator, AC, and master cylinder as well as the hood.
- the bottom with the car on stands at 22" was okay, but the top of the engine bay was a bit too tall to work in comfortably for me.
