Default So, how loud is this going to be? Muffler out, resonator in.

My original plan was to delete my cat converter (I'm now registered "Historic" in MD which means no more tests), but a combination of factors got me thinking that it would better to keep the cat. (1) The cat is not really restrictive. (2) I could keep the car "legal" and sell it to someone who needed to pass an emissions test, (3) It seems kind of greedy to increase my pollutants for a little bit of HP.

So, I'm keeping the cat and I'm going to put the resonator (Magnaflow 8" diameter x 24" length, straight-through) where the muffler was. I haven't got it welded up yet so I don't know what to expect.

Any thoughts on how loud this is going to be? I know I'm saving about 15 lbs.

NAs are too loud without the cat. If you look into the cat, the first half is a converter element and the last half is really just resonator. I went with stock cat, stock resonator, and borla xr-1 (which is a straight through "race" muffler advertised as off-road use only) and the car is not too loud. I've heard the NAs are absolutely obnoxiously loud with a straight pipe.

i kept my stock muffler but had a new cat installed, this one has two catalyzing elements but no resonator.

its louder but not bad, it certainly is a little raspier and it snarls at 3000+

I had a straight pipe on my 83 for a while and it was very loud.

Now I'm running no cat with the stock muffler and the sound is pretty raspy. I need to get a resonator on and it should sound pretty nice.

no muffler is def way loud. a good cheap resonator alternative is to just go to autozone/pepboys and get a cherry bomb for $25. if it doesn't sound right, at least yer only out $25 heh.

I have no muffler on my car with the cat still on, sounds nice when your cruising but step on the gas any more than half throttle and it sounds terrible. Super loud high raspyish.

So you just have the cat, with the little can resonator behind it, and then straight out? I'll have all that plus another resonator where the muffler was.

This was my n/a with full 2.5'' SFR exhaust, no cat..everything from the y-pipe back. Borla XR-1 muffler also. It was ungodly loud and very annoying on the street. I went back to the stock y-pipe and cat after a few days.

I have a bullet style resonator and a borla xr-1. It's loud but sounds great.

I'm still getting around to dropping the $150 or whatever for a xr-1. But out of all the n/a mufflers I've seen, it looks to be the only good choice.

Just beware about the xr-1. It is a race muffler. It will be LOUD, regardless of your setup. You can see straight through the muffler. Just be prepared and be sure that is what you want.

^ ^ with the cat in place I find it isn't too much louder than stock. I like it alot, especially since I paid about $40 for it at a junkyard.

Stock Cat, Dansk Muffler from Pelican, I think it sounds almost stock, until you step on the gas, not sure if I get more exhaust or intake noise (K&N air filter) but I think it sounds real good, especially on a downshift during passing on the highway....

Fun car, I need to shoot a film and post it for everyone to drool over....

Rockville. Historic plates for 20 year old cars is an amazing loophole. No more inspections!
