I recently broke an R&P at the drag strip. The problem (I had, at least) was that the car gets massive wheel hop. My car has LSD (which almost all NAs do not) and would spin both tires, but I had them spinning fast enough on this launch that they started hopping and that busted the R&P. It will happen very suddenly and you won't be able to stop it.

i've done a couple of burn outs, but honostly most people with rwd's will over time. it's just not a cheap fix if something goes wrong. i've spent 700 on a tranny, installed(partially by me) at a friends shop, he helped. the clutch went which was a lovely 1500 dollars.

i'll bet that i've you had spent 2g more than you did on the n/a you coulda gotten an 87 vette

Whatever, it's just a car and if you really want to, just do it. 944 R&Ps blow up all the time, sometimes out of nowhere, so figure you are going to need a new one eventually anyway. I don't think you will destroy your car if you do it just once. If you do it repeatedly, you better have a spare tranny.

And like others have said, you could also hurt the clutch. If the clutch is old, and you want an excuse to replace it soon, then have at it! Remember: if the tires are not peeling out, that means your clutch is peeling out instead! If the tires are peeling out then the clutch is ok at that moment.

For added fun-factor, and less stress on the car, do it on a wet road. You can hose down the street in front of your house if you really want to be "resourceful".

Same happened to me on my old LSD tranny in my N/A. I kept the differentiall however, and will eventually put a new ring gear on it and throw it in another trans.

Rubber center on theclutch is the weal point.
The Ring gear is not hardened and very weak. Do a search there are pics out there..

The questions is:
Why would you want to to this?
Do you need more tire temp?

If you must,
do it on a wet closed of road.

Now doesn't he look a fool?

I didn't know the R&P was so 'easy' to replace (2 hours of work according to one post), if you have a spare trans.

How hard is it to open up the trans and replace the R&P in your existing trans?

Swapping transmissions out is easy and should only take an hour or two.

Opening up the gear box is an entirely different story.

Honestly, the first time or two you do it, it will take you longer than 2 hours to do, even if you have all of the tools, jackstands, jack, and a helper or two. Plan on 4-5 hours from jack-up to jack-down.

Replacing the R&P is not an easy home-job and requires a lot of special tools, a hotplate, and a lot of time. Not to mention the fact that a new R&P set costs way more than a decent used trans.

My previous tranny had a 1 inch hunk of the pinion gear loose and stuck to the magnet...it still shifted fine...was just noisy. I bought a good used box for $200 and it took me about 2 hours to re and re in the garage by myself.

I'm always on the lookout for a good spare transaxle...when I see a deal I'm grabbing it and putting it under my workbench.

Replacing the R&P sucks because you have to re-set the backlash and tolerances, etc.

The 944S trans/axle is beefed up. I've got a good used one, low miles for sale off an '88 S. It's going on ebay I think this week.

So if the R&P breaks would replacing the transaxle fix it. What if you just replaced the differential?

Once again! I am not saying I am going to do this I am just trying get more info.

just so that we are clear this is what we are talking about right? Scroll down to look at the differential.
