Post 944 dash speaker

hello all- this is my first post on rennlist and it is concerning the unused center dash speaker in my early 944. Basically, i am wondering if there is anything i can do with it to improve my sound system or is there a dash cap which covers the speaker grill altogether. any info would help. thanks!

I put a speaker in it. I did that because I had a 79 924 and they didnt come with door speakers. So I wired both front outputs of the stereo to that one speaker and wired the (small) rear speakers correctly. It put out pretty good sound because its right in front of you, but you lose the stereo effect.... Dont know of a dash cap.

I know mine are blown- or at least very poor.. How does the grille come off? I tried (gently) to pry it and it seems to be screwed in.. I'd love to put some directional tweeters in there!

Mine just kind of popped out, there are four things that click in on all corners; one broke, but I found a damned alarm horn there, making a total of 3 in the car! No wonder the car had electrical problems.

Just gently pry all four corners. Anyway, someone gave me a killer idea, if you aren't going to put a speaker there - hide a radar detector in there, so if you do get pulled over, they can't see it!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do, still need a stereo to begin with!

my car also had no door speakers only the center dash one. so what i did was put 2two 3.5" speakers in the place of the one dash one and custom cut my door pannels to fit 5.25" woofers ans a 1" tweeter in them, check it out in my sig

Thanks. Radar detector?? I dont NEED any radar detector.. fast on a closed track only!!
My motto is.. When you drive something that sticks out like a sore thumb I dont give them ANY reason to pull me over.. so far so good.. knock on wood!

I'm thinking what else I could put in there. garage door opener? CD storage pocket? ANOTHER ASHTRAY? 4" subwoofer?
NOS button- LOL!

I am putting two gauges there in my race car. I have a plug made for a mold, but I have to touch up a few details. The gauges will be angled towards the driver.

I asked George at 944 Ecology about that. Particularly if he had a speaker that would fit in there in decent shape. He said basically that that bit is a hold over from the 924 dash and that 944's didn't come with speakers there (meant to tell you Chris but I forgots sorry). Like Jay said, it would increase output, but kill stereo effect.

I wanted, and still do, to put a touchscreen in there to run an Mp3 system. Maybe someday when I have more money and time.

Sid, I think I'll eventually install a pop-up DVD screen there, ingenious!

Okay, here's a close-up of how the speaker grill is put in, from removing my own the other day, revealing the thief deafening horn blaster!

See? There are four plastic tabs that you push the ends of the speaker prongs into. The upper left, as you can see, is broken, so you have to pry carefully. But it still stays in place.

The latex gloves are a nice touch, Devia. I've seen mechs wear them at Audi dealers... You doing a little professional car wrenching on the side, perhaps? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

About the detector storage, I believe Martin Taylor uses the grille area for this, but can't locate the pics on his website of how he worked it out.

I have rubber gloves, but forget to wear them.. Thanks for the pic Julie- I'll try to remove it today. Seems a little "proctological..."
So- we finally get to see a pic of Julie clad in rubber... Those darned Cali chicks!!!

Would it be ok to put a detector in there? Like a V1 with remote display? Or would it affect the signal.

Conor
