Post CV Joints or????

Yesterday, almost home, my 944 started making a clunking sound (like someone pounding on the transmission with a hammer), which sped up with acceleration, but went away when the clutch was pressed in. I parked it at home and called my mechanic today, told him the problem who told me it was the CV joints and to drive it in tomorrow (approx. 3 miles). I asked if that would hurt the car and he said it would not.

I am wondering if this is really the CV joints. I ran a topic search, but did not find any describing a CV problem where the sound went away when the clutch was pressed in. Any thoughts or anyone who has had a similar problem?

Thanks.

CV Joints:

<a href="http://209.6.126.158:10080/944/cvjoints/cvjoints.php" target="_blank">Booyakah</a>

When you're not accelerating or deccelerating (neutral) it'll click a lot less.

What's he want for the job? I think Paragon sells OEM axles all lubed up ready to go for $175...All you have to do is get some new bolts and make sure you don't strip the other suckers...

Make sure you torque 'em good, they've been known to back out...

He said around $1200. I think I'll check Paragon.

Also, will the noise go away if the problem is CV joints? I moved the car from the front to the back of the house and the noise was completely gone...at least for now. Very confusing.

Yes, mine did the same thing. When I backed up, it stopped and I couldn't reproduce it. Then at the next light it came back..

I'll come to New Orleans and do it myself for $1000.

You might try just swapping the axles from left to right (keeping the inside joint inside, outside outside, etc). Throw some new grease in there and see if it stops for a while. That's the cheapo solution...
