Default Fuel pump question

Hey guys!

A few days ago my car wouldn't start after sitting in the garage for a while. I opened the FSM and troubleshot the problem down to the fuel pump. When the key is in the on position, I get +12V to the fuel pump, but the pump doesn't crank over at all. If I connect the fuel pump directly to the battery, it sputters a bit but doesn’t quite work right.

So, replace the fuel pump, right? I did just that. I bought a used pump off of ebay, and it is doing the exact same thing. The new pump won’t crank over at all, and will sputter a bit if I connect it directly to the battery.

Is there something I’m not aware of? Am I crazy, or do I have 2 bad pumps on my hands?

Cheers,

Jared

When connecting directly to the battery, what ground path are you using?

The negative battery terminal. I just connected leads from the battery directly to the fuel pump.

yeah sounds like either you have a weak lead to the pump or perhaps a bad ground. When are you testing the pump, with the fuel in the lines or dry? You may want to pull the filter screen in the side of the tank while its apart and make sure that is clean since you have the pump off already.

not the fuel filter, but the filter that screws into the side of the tank- the U shaped hose comes off of it to the pump.

Ahh, gotcha. Well, when I removed the pump the first time, I let all the fuel drain into a gas tank from that same hose. So that should prove that the filter isnt totally clogged... Ill check it just in case though.

Shouldn't the pump start running if I connect it directly to the battery, though?

yes it should- not sure if you can mess up directionally- swap wires. Not good to run them very much dry though as the fuel lubricates the pump.

Yea, I hear you. I only tested it for a few seconds... unsuccesfully. Im going to double check my grounds to make sure they are secure.

Ok, I checked the pump with my other car's battery, and it still didnt work. I checked the scupper filter, and it seems to be fine....Soooo, Im guessing the pump is bad.

Heres one more question for you guys: whats the difference between the 968/S2 fuel pump and the 944 NA/Turbo pump? Can I use an early pump with a 968 engine? Are the delivery rates the same?

Thanks!

J
