Default What's an early 944 worth?

I found an '84 944 near me that needs a lot of work. If I can get it for practiacally nothing, I'd consider putting a few thousand into it and selling it... if a nice, attractive early 944 with a new clutch, brake rotors/pads, timing belt, engine mounts, tune up, maybe shocks, and alignment could fetch $4k... But, looking at ebay's completed auctions, I'm not sure if I'd be able to get that much.

If any of you have bought or sold a plain jane early 944 lately, what was the price?

Thanks!

If it is in typical cosmetic condition (cracked dash, torn seat bolsters, paint blemishes, dings, etc.), you are looking at $3k tops. I have done this a few times, but never made more than a few hundred dollars. There are just too many minor issues that crop up when you get into it. If you can get it for practically nothing, then the most profitable path (sadly) is parting it out. The good news is that you can invest $4k in it and drive it for a few years and it will still be worth about the same. There are also some options that may increase the value (sunroof delete, LSD transaxle, sport suspension, Fuchs wheels, etc.)

What bargains for the buyers - but that sucks for the sellers.

944s are such good cars, but when the parts alone for a major service exceed the street value... how do you justify it?

I guess it just has to be a labor of love - and it helps if you like to spend money.

How do I justify it? My car's not an investment and as long as I want to keep driving it, it's worth it. I bought mine for $2500 and I've probably put another $2000 in mechanical maintenance I couldn't do myself. More if you count the cosmetics. But I'm not stopping in $500 time, not by a long shot. I'm having too much fun driving it.

Even at dealer prices it seems you can get a low mileage early car in very good condition for less than $7k. 1983 944

$4K-$6K depending. But if this one needs that much work it probably isn't that nice. So you are looking @ $2.5K-$3K. I wouldn't waste your time unless this is something you enjoy and don't mind breaking even on.

While it is something I enjoy, I don't think this car is a good candidate for me (although it is down the street). A young kid owns it and thinks it's worth WAY too much money.

I'm better off putting my time into getting my 914 engine back together; revolutionizing the watercooled 911 world, or getting more weight out of the 951 race car.
