Angry tail light lenses

my 91 s2 appears to be vomiting some kind of black gasket material out and around the tail lights. im sure its from heat and time but is the seal broken on the tail lights or is this material a sealent between the tail lights and the body. plus this stuff has proven extremely difficult to remove from the paint

It's called 3m Strip Caulk, and is not a mess at all wot work with. Getting the old stuff out is a mess.

As mentioned by others, this is 3m Strip Caulk or equivalent. It is used between the tail light assembly and the body, there is no "lens", just an assembly. Although it is unlikely some expanding caulk, probably from the heat, has broken the seal, simply pull back the carpet on the inside while squirting carefully with a hose on the outside to check for leaks.
