Default New 944 50/50 she will make it

Here is a 944 I picked up but she has sat for 2 years and either needs cooler seals (hope) or a head gasket. She has already been threw the insurance auction (1999 but clear title) and has 215k miles so if it the head gasket she will be parted out.

The good news is,

New adjustable KONI shocks/struts,
H&R Sport springs on front
Upgraded sway bars, from later 951.

and I think she will clean up nice....

Aside from two poorly placed bolts (by a coolant passage), the 944 head gasket replacement is $100 in parts (some while you're in there stuff too, so maybe $300). It's not that bad to DIY.

Having parted one of these cars, I can say if all it needs is a headgasket you will come out far ahead in timeXmoney by fixing the car and flipping it, and then flipping burgers for the amount of extra time it would take to part the car.

I did a head gasket, oil cooler seals, both belts, thermostat, AOS seals.....basically everything on the top end that goes along with "While you're in there".... PLUS the Arnnworx tool max set (Which is way over kill....all you really need is the timing belt tension gauge)... for around 600 bucks.

Very worth it if you're going to keep it....

Hey if you end up parting it out in a few weeks time I'll be looking to pickup some sway bars.

Agreed - easily salvageable if it's the HG. Less work than parting it!

Default odds are...

I am guessing OC seals. It is an easier job and more likely. try that first and if it doesn't work then move on to the head, which again is not so hard. 600 for a tensioner tool? bah, humbug. I get along just fine with a cricket and/or a twist. hey, good luck and try to keep these cars on the road as they are classics.

I rather do a head gasket than an OC seal. Its less mess.

Default rathers

well...yea, it is messy. Ok very messy with all the oil and coolant that just keeps dripping out at you. Clean the hec out of it before you work. I put down a lot of newspaper and have painters trays and buckets ready. when ya finally get the housing off, jam some old towels up there. Afterletting the car splooge a half hour or so you can begin the actual work.

Even though messy, I would prefer the OC seal job because you can be done with it in a few hours. A head just takes longer (at least for me).

All rathers and druthers aside, ya do what needs to be done. My best guess is that it is the OC seals and 8 outa 10 times that is what it is. I would go with the odds and just do the seals. Hec, you might have to do both.

is that car early or late offset? If it is late or the inserts are the same, and something i am looking at pans out i may be interested in the shocks/struts. dont need the sways.

I ended up just having it towed to my mechanic in Seattle but he can't look at it until next week. It is a 85.5 so early offets.
