Post 18" 993 Turbo twist wheels on an 86 951?

I found a set of 18" 993 Turbo factory twists in like new shape with stock rubber (500 miles wear) for $2000. This sounds like a good deal. I've been interested in wheels for a while, but the price on this might put me over the edge and drive me to spring for the set. I guess I'd need to score some spacers to deal with the offset, and perhaps roll the fenders slightly. Anyone running 18"s on an 86? Any feedback on the feel and durability of 18"s on a 951?

Thanks in advance,

Steve Cooper

after placing the post, I started digging for old threads on the issue... sounds like 18"s aren't encouraged by the factory.

Steve, looks like you got quite a deal on your hands there. I won't go into the debate on 18" wheels because that's been beaten to death; do what you will, just be aware of the TSBs out there. With Porsche become so much more 'corporate' this past decades, I wouldn't be surprised if the 18" TSB was really a case of them doing some CYA maneuvers.

Anyway, check out these threads for the various issues:

I have 18's will soon be buying 19's...............I dont see the problem as long as you can deal with the harsher ride.

Also, if these are the solid spoke "turbo look" wheels in 65 mm offset they are 5 lb heavier per wheel than the hollow spoke versions, so keep that in mind.

As far as 18s on the 944, Porsche says no, but we say yes... I just ordered a set of new hollow spokes from Brumos today

Steve, if you get the rear 18x10" wheel with 40mm offset, you won't need the rear spacer or studs. If you get the 65mm offset one, you'll need the 28mm spacer and longer studs...

Danno, does that seem like a good deal? I thought it was, since it included full Pirelli P-zero rubber... BTW, your name is in pretty much every thread I dug up. You're the wheel man.

Tom, the wheels I'm looking at are the solid spoke versions, yet they came off a wide body turbo... according to the seller. How much are the hollow spokes you're ordering?

I should measure to check for offset/backspacing. I didn't even write down the rubber sizes, gotta drop back by the shop once I have some time later this week.

I think that wheels make a huge difference in how modern a car looks.

Maybe porsche doesnt want us to realize that the biggest different in the looks between and old porsche and a new porsche is the wheels?

I think that I have turbo twists on my car. Do they look like this? Mine are only 17 though.

I will have to check the PET later. I have the part numbers for them on my web site in the Technik section so you can compare.
[quote]How much are the hollow spokes you're ordering?

$1700 for 7.5 and 10x18s. These were in Pano for $2495 with Pirelli tires but I wanted just the wheels and they sold them to me Now I can fit whatever tire I want for about the same price as the set. I do not know if they have any more sets of these left, or if they would demount the tires for you. I was actually a bit surprised that they did this for me... but I guess selling the wheels is better than not selling anything, and I'm happy about it.

Bryan,

The wheels I'm looking at are the same, but in the flat aluminum powder coat style. 18 inch as well. Thnaks for the image, they look good and really seem to update the car. I enterd in the URL info from when you tried to upload the image to rennlist.

Tom,

If you can dig up part numbers that would be great. I'd like to check these wheels out further, an inconsistent message (solid vs. hollow spokes) from the seller has me scratching my head. Thanks for the price comparison on your 17"s from Pano. Seems like the 2K the seller is looking for with p-zeros is good but not a steal...

Cheers,

Steve Cooper
