You have to take these claims with a grain of salt. Your '87 started right around 2900lbs wet, so you're right where you should be.

I think the PCA SP1 rules specify no fiberglass body panels... Just check with the NASA rules before you do too much.

Uh, I would take Joe's number without any grains of salt as the spec guys have to be exact with their weight...

BB a miata is merely a little bigger than my r6, which stock weighs less than 400lb and 124hp with nothing removed and a full tank of gas..

Yeah, well, my bicycle weighs much less than 400 pounds!

Not as much power, tho...

Mine weighs 1550 without ballast...

... but then again, it's not a 944. My 944 weighs 2843 with 3/4 tank of fuel. It's bone stock.

Here's the track beast....

By the way - here is the same car in its previous life. It weighed about 2600 lbs when I got it.

It is possible to take off a lot of weight. It depends on the rules you are working to. In this case it was the Prepared class in SCCA Solo.

Too bad 944s don't rust. Rust is a racer's freind, its always working at lightening the car.

Seriously, are you sure you want to spend a lot of money on a 944 to move up in GTS class? You better improve your engine power too. Too light will put you in a class with some pretty fast 911s. I had a 2100# 911T with 135 dynoed and was in the lowest class. I was the fastest in my group (GTS 1) until I was blacked flagged for an oil leak on the headers (smoke bomb). I was actually faster then most GTS 2 cars.

PCA isn't in the plans this time for this one, besides it has already seen plenty of PCA racing, just NASA which runs GTS Challenge as a power to weight ratio class so fiberglass, CF, or Lexan are all possible for me.
The real goal here is to build a reliable car that can be competitve in NASA for about half the price that most are doing currently. If I can hit my goals with the car I will be racing against some M3's, 944 turbo's, and 911's - all heavier than me but with more power. I would like to end up in GTS3 with the car although making it to GTS2 will probably be the first step.

For those interested in the rules you can see them here, they are pretty simple rules only being two pages long, and since it is a power to weight ratio class it is very competitive. I think the more people see this class and the rules the more will see it as a great place to run ! http://gtschallenge.com/rules.htm

The NASA group of people are great to deal with as well, I have been at NASA races from Texas, Ohio, and Calif. and everyone from other racers to officials were always great.

I just finished building a 996 for a friend to run in NASA GTS3, and have a few other cars I have done as well, so I am pretty familiar with the rules.

Thanks,
Viking

Viking,

My car was built specifically for GTS3. At 2500 lbs and 227 rwhp, I sit right at the limit of the class (11.01). I feel the car is very competitive in it's class, although the driver may not be.

Yep,
Last time at the scales at Miller I was 2624 lbs with driver after qualyfing. I run the car with Target of 15lbs to 25lbs over min weight. This allows me some comfort margin just incase I run lower than anticipated on fuel or the scales are a bit light. It seems to work as the last 4-5 times over the scales I have been about that weight. Removing my weight fully suited up puts the car around 2450-2460lbs. I know I can easly pull 50lbs since I have 30lbs bolted to the passenger's floor to make my target weight and can pull the passenger's reaing seat, harness & swap in a light weight battery. I can even still pull door glass for another 5lbs or so. This means my car is a stone throw away from being sub 2400lbs without driver. However there is no need to go there with a min class weight of 2600lbs. This is with an 84 chassis and bits of 87 924S thrown in the mix. Still has all the undercoating and most of the goop in the interior. I did cut away most of the unneeded wiring however.

The 2166lbs I threw out came from a rennlister a few years back. I cannot confirm it, but I guess it may be possible if you cut alway alot of sheet metal. I think it was without driver though.

2600lbs with driver is very doable for an NA stripped, but still with stock body work and glass. Of course it is alot harder with 250lbs driver as compared to a 150lbs driver. Some car do seem to struggle to get there even with 170lbs drivers, but often times that includes cool suits and many little places were weight could come out. Even so I have seen track records set by cars at 2670lbs.

Yes, GTS fun is a ton of fun ! And with a 2000lb car and me at 200lbs thats 2200 lbs and 150 RWHP that puts me right at the GTS2 rules of 14.5/1 .
Drop some more weight, add some more hp, go to slicks and I am into GTS3 !
I think it will be competitive, of course I will have to drive it like I stole it, but hey thats my problem.
I don't plan on having more than 15k in it, and that is figuring that I already have 5K in it now. I do my own work so that will help keep costs down,it already has a cage, race seat, and some other things done to it, the extra 10k will be really all for parts I need to lighten it, paint, and then a few other goodies.
I'm not scared of the 911's, I've been driving them myself for years.
I just figure a $15K GTS2/3 car should be a pretty good value and can be competitive.

Time for that diet. Just need to drop 100 pounds and get down to about 65 lbs total body weight then I'll be right in line.

Joe, are you running headlights? I assume cookie cutters?
