One other point on AX's: You will usually get more seat time with PCA sponsored AX's than with SCCA or some other clubs. Fewer cars means more time to drive

Last one I ran in Phoenix we had 4 sessions with 3 continuous laps plus a warmup; never had that much run time with SCCA.

Cheers,

Keith

Thanks for the info guys, seems like a good deal for me next year or so when the car's a bit more sturdy.

On a semi-related note does anybody have an extra race seat/seats they want to get rid of?

I run autoX for pca-cwr and we get about 4 to 6 runs in the AM and another 4-6 runs in the PM. (Anywhere from 8 to 12 runs)

~25-35 cars and ~50sec laps.

Your enjoyment is doubled or quadrupled if you have the sense to get some rides with other people as much as you can!

Personally, I think AutoX should be grassroots motorsports, gettin' yer feet wet, learning lots, and socialising and having a good time, in a safe, but relaxed, friendly competition atmosphere.

( I personally don't care for National SCCA autocross - I just can't fathom being THAT serious about AutoX ... )

DE and Club Racing are more my cup of tea, BUT, the game is signifcantly upped at those levels, and the atmosphere is FAR more serious for obvious reasons.

I have wanted to DE ever since I got my 944. I would like to autox as well, but DE sounds like ALOT more fun to me.

My trouble is knowing when, and where they are. I'm sure alot of that is lazyness on my part. I haven't really searched for them.

My question this time is..... which would be a better club to join? The SCCA sounds like it does more track related stuff, but its not "Porsche" specific. The local chapter of my PCA sounds cool because its just Porsche, but its more "get togethers", brunches, and cruises...... Which is fine, I'm not doggin that stuff, but I want to race!....well, I want to DRIVE REALLY FAST...SAFELY (not on public streets)!! lol.

for DE ive found the best as in most seat time to be the clubs. PCA BMWCCA etc. I went to a SCCA event and flagged. I got a free lunch and inquired about their driving school. The best answer i got is i pay 100 and get one twenty minute session or if i work one day i get the session free the next.

NASA has a school too, but it is more $$ than PCA.

check the sites, join teh clubs and drive. all you need is a helmet and a fire extinguisher. seats, etc. can be bought down the line. reality is if you really like it you will want a more track specific car than the one you have.

Las Vegas can be sort of a dead zone for track time. Spring Mountain has events. Go to their website and see who is rending the the track. Then sign-up with them. You can also come down run with us in Phoenix too.

Yeah, I've looked at the spring mtn site.....not much going on there. LV motor speedway doesn't seem to do any "renting" of thier track....even though it has both the NASCAR oval, and a road course.

I have thought about a weekend trip to either cali, or phoenix. I shall think about this seriously next summer (though, in this climate, do the tracks stay open year round?). I would love to drive sonoma, or Laguna Seca!!!

Also, I will check out NASA...I've never heard of them.

Thanks for the info guys

Arizona tracks don't run year around. We take break June-August, but are back running in September and through out the winter. December events can be rare just do the holiday season and all.

NASA Arizona is a great group to run with. I race with NASA and we have one event a month when the weather is nice. PCA Arizona is also a nice group and has nice track days. They only do 1 day events and about 5 or so a year.

I used to run them, but have only limited time so I just stick to the NASA races.

what happens when you wreck. and you WILL eventually wreck. is state farm gonna fix the car.

my belief is if you cant afford to wreck it and take a total loss on the car, you probably cant afford to race it.

There are always risks associated, but every effort is made to make these events as safe as possible.

Autocrosses are typically in large parking lots or airfields, the worst thing you can hit is a cone.

Open track days are non-competition events, passing is usually only allowed on long straights with a point by coming from the driver being passed.

There are corner workers watching you. Anyone driving outside their limits consistently or in a dangerous fashion will get a talking to, or even asked to leave. I've seen it.

If you're on the fence about doing one of these, I recommend going to one as a spectator first. Look at your local scca club website, local race track forum, or sites like www.myautoevents.com to find something by you.

Check your policy. Mine says that so long as it's a non-competitive event, I'm covered on the track. I told em it's a Drivers Education event, they're like "so like a defensive driving course?" "exactly."

so, if you're timed or if there are standings posted, you're SOL. if it's go out, have fun, be safe, you're cool. That is exactly why I bought the insurance policy I have.

I agree. That's why I am in the conundrum i am in. i can lose what i have into my S2 but want something a little nicer as my toy.

you sure the worst thing you can do is hit a cone? At a metrony event a few years back a chap wrapped his new 911 turbo around a pole. i was told it looked like nobody would have survived that crash. the driver then borrowed a friends car and finished the day. towards the end of the day his wife stopped by. he forgot to call her. she drove into the lot, saw this practically jaws of life car on the side....

the smash up didnt kill him, but im not so sure of his wife.

did you see me spin and miss the concrete wall by inches? i wasnt asked to leave, and i thought i was within my limits. i guess i was since i didnt hit the wall.

one policy i had said something to the effect of enter the parking lot and you are SOL. another had competition and timed in the language which would get me one hit. im not sure what my regular insurance says. the difference is 400 v 700 a year so come september i may switch it to regular car insurance and use it on sunny winter days.
