Post Tire Help non-944 related but you guys are so cool

Allright so I had to majorly stop my vehicle today. All four tires locked up. Now the steering is wobbly at higher speeds. Is this because the tires have flat spotted, or did I mess something else up? If it's the tires is it going to go away after a bunch of miles?
Thanks a lot.

I'm not a tire specialist, but I would say yes on the lock up. I seen some tires with some terrible flats spots after locking them up. You should be able to tell if they're real bad just by looking at them.

As far as will it go away with mileage, I don't think so! You'll probably have to look into some replacements :-(

hitbystick:
The vibration is most likely due to some flat-spotting. You can always have the tires shaved at a local tire shop, but they'll probably try to sell you a new set of rubber.

If you go the shaving route, you might as well have them re-balance your wheels. (Check to make sure all of your wheel weights are still on the wheels)

Just my $0.42,

Well, the way that I fix flatspotting is to equally fix all of the flat spots on the tires. Remember the stop you had to make to flat spot the tires? Continually do that until every portion of the tire is now equally flat. Do not worry about smoke eminating from your tires, this is normal. It normally will take upwards of 20 or 30 really hard stops in order to properly "re-round" all 4 of the tires. If you do not feel comfortable doing this yourself then you can take it to a trained professional. The shops that I would recommend are. "Performance Flatspotting", "Rounding Rubber" or "Rubber Masters, Making Rubber Round for 35 years". Last time I had the service done it was $15 a tire. Rubber Masters was very cool about the whole deal. They have a special device for the tires that are not flat spotted. This way they won't flat spot a good tire. And unlike Performance Flatspotting, Rubber Masters will work on any make or model of tire. Performance will only work on Asian import tires. "Bridgstone, Khumo, Yokohama, etc."

Good Luck

Flat spots are probably the issue. I had a similar problem on my old Toyota and above 70, the wheel felt like an earthquake. My fix was new tires.
Eventually wearing them under normal conditions will even out the surface. Shorter lived stickier tires will round out faster than 50k mile tires, but they'd still take a long time.
If you want it done now, do a five minute burn out, switch front and rear, then do another burn out. No more flat spots.

Thanks guys that would make sense. The fronts need replacing anyway. I wonder what I'll get as a replacement for the Yokohamas.

What kind of Yokes? I love the AVS int. but unfortunately they are out of production now. I ahve been running the intermediates for several years now (a couple of sets) and am not sure what to put on next.

I recommend Kuhmo MXs. They're cheap, they have stiff sidewalls, and they're sticky as hell.
Of course you'll change them almost as much as your oil, but they're worth it.
