RX7 vs 944

i've had 34 RX-7's over the past 14 years and i've enjoyed them very much. they are reliable if maintained, very fun to drive, are cheap to buy in most cases, and give a lot of performance for what you pay. i prefer the 84-85 S3 series because its the most accomodating as far as the interior is concerned and built the best out of the first generation series. i bought my 944 two years ago and i am very pleased with the car. the car's let down is its cheap interior plastics and vinyl headliner. my 85 RX-7 's interior is near perfect and has held up well over its 144K miles. where the 7 pales in comparison to the 944 is the excellent steering of the 944, the build quality of the body, and the overall excellent engineering of the engine and transmission.
both cars have their own unique shape and are loved or hated by members of other car makers. i do not care much for the 2nd generation cars. they are built well and extremely well engineered, but they just lack a back to basics sports car feel. the 944 and the 1st generation RX-7's appeal to me and i believe that in some areas they compete directly and in some areas not so much and one maybe better than the other in certain subjective or objective categories.

34 RX7s?? Either you were a car dealer or I'm not feeling the reliability factor coming on strong...

Comparing a first gen RX-7 to a 944 is no contest. The 944 will beat it up all day long. The first gen RX-7 was built with leftover parts from the RX-3 and Rotary Pickup... Solid rear axle, truck box steering, watts link... They would push in the corners until you got to the edge, and then oversteer as the rear suspension bound up... Lot of fun, but not very fast in stock configuration...
Now the second gen- that's a different story! More horsepower, better suspension, better brakes... But it did gain a lot of weight... Regarding racing, I don't know what the OP is talking about. I see a LOT more RX-7s racing than I do 924/944's... Go out to any SCCA race weekend, and take a look!

I bought a s4 turbo fc3s a while back.
I loved the engine and still do but the rest of the car felt lacking to me. The brakes were decent and it was nice having a factory LSD but beyond that the whole thing felt kind of "cheapish." Also the interior was pretty bad and the driving position/shifter made me feel like I was driving a third gen camaro. I went back to the 944 and added a turbo to it instead and got the car that I was after the whole time.

Three Wheelin'
Due to the way rotaries are built(steel alu steel etc bolted together) they need to be warmed up before being driven so all the metals were uniformly expanded. If they are warmed up before a load is placed on them they are very reliaable, but if you drive them when motor is cold they end up sucking down oil like there is no tomorrow and the fuel economy is woeful no mattwer what condition the motor is in. My first one (RX4 13B) would pass anything but a gas station. It felt like you could see the fuel gauge drop everytime you floored it, which I did all the time. I loved that car but never missed the fuel bills when it was gone.
It was a well balanced car and handled well for a japanese car but did not compared to 944

Burning Brakes
For the record, my friend has a 1988 RX7 cabrio and my S2 destroyed his car. It wasn't even close. We ran from the on ramp till as fast as we could go and I was at 120 and still climbing and he was literally a spec in my mirror.
