Torque tube noise w/ trans out question
Hello folks,
I am in the middle of a clutch job on my '86 951 and I now have the trans. out. When I spin the drive shaft in the torque tube I can hear what I think is the bearings in the tube. My question is, with the trans. out and clutch pedal pushed in, should I be hearing any noise from the torque tube when I spin the driveshaft?
I'm going to try and record it to post it so you guys can hear it tomorrow.
Thanks
Tom

Well, found out I can not upload anything from work, so it will have to wait until tonight for the sound clip.
Without the clip, does anyone have an idea?
I'm looking into bearings already, I just want to get an idea if there is something else I should be looking at.
Thanks
Tom

I do not know but am thinking about inspecting clutch disc for bad hub. In low gear it get a real jerking on of throttle at low speed. Otherwise nice and quite. When off gas on a strong coast in 1,2 or 3 I get noise also almost like a bad ring and pinion. Some say it is a bad clutch hub, would you perhaps be having the same problem? clutch works great.

so it sounds like the engine/torque tube are still in the car but the transmission is all thats taken out?
if so that noise would be the torque tube bearings gone bad.
if the car were driveable you could hear the bearings but when you push the clutch in the noise would stop because the shaft is no longer spinning on the bearings. now if you spin the shaft it should make some noise

I went out and and tested this on mine tonight just for jollies since the engine and trans are both out. When I spin the shaft I can hear 'some minor' bearing noise but you have to realize they were a looser C5 or C4 tolerance from the factory. They could very easily make 'some noise' even at hand spun speed. They don't really carry that much load or high rpm, but they do center and reduce vibrations through the rubber bearing retainers against the inner wall of the tube. I don't feel mine are bad as I've driven the car just before it coughed up a rod bearing and it was smooth with no noise at that time. That being said, I still going to replace them as part of my engine/clutch work. Since you trans is already out I would replace them unless your car is under 100K miles. You might not get a better chance in the future.

Jack my car does the exact same thing! When I put the clutch in with it still in gear, I still have a noise. If I move into neutral the noise subsides. However, in neutral clutch in or out there still is a bit of noise.
Clutch hub?
