Definitely start by doing this. You may get lucky and find that the bolt falls out when you remove the starter. Are you certain the bolt went in the hole? I thought I had dropped a ground nut in there only to find it resting on the side of the block. Lucky deflection.

Here is something that has not been tried. Try using a long steel nossle air blow gun with your compresor and blow it from every position imaginable including from the bottom front between the flywheel and the oil pan. Maybe it will be enough to get it out.

I dropped a bolt in there as well, while putting my clutch job back together. Ya know,,,, taking the torque tube, bellhousing and clutch apart the second time is much quicker....damn ! Now I have a piece of sponge rubber glued into that hole.

I took out the speed sensor and spun the crank slowly.
And it fell out the clutch inspection hole!
And BTW... there is a glove in that TDC hole now!!

This was very entertaining. Like walking down the street and happening on a bunch of strangers on their hands and knees trying to help some poor guy find a contact lens.
Happy ending, too.

That hole is more powerful than any black hole in the universe. It must be treated with respect. It will swallow any nut, bolt, or heater control clip that gets near it. In fact, I don't like getting too close to it when I'm doing setting TDC. I'm afraid what it might do.
