I have no experience driving the BMW, but I can definately say the 944 is a blast to autocross in. All the newer M3s I see autocross appear to be too heavy and overpowered. They end up spinning on half their runs. It could just be the drivers though. But I think you'll learn alot more in the 944 where you can completely screw up the throttle input and not immediately come around. Also, you'll learn to carry more speed through the turns instead of just trying to get to the straight as quickly as possible.

Have you autocrossed in either before?

I'd say try both! Perhaps you can let your friend drive the 944S, and you can drive the M3, and switch cars for half the runs. That way you can compare car vs. car with the same driver/ability. (If your autox people let you do this)

That is a great dillema you have there, auto-x a Porsche or the M3, not a bad pickle to be stuck in.

And really you can't go wrong, are you looking to win or just enjoy yourself? I would say if you are looking to win then the M3 might be a better choice they are still winning on a national level.

If this was my choice I think I would go with the M3, they are joy in auto-x because of that torque, yes they are heavy, but the suspension take the wieght well, and can put the power down. That said I not driven a 44S in auto-x, just my fathers e36 M3 and my 951. The 951 is not a great auto-x car with turbo lag and all, and i'm sure the n/a 44S would be more enjoyable.

How is this for an idea, take a turn in each, often at the end of an auto-x they allow free runs, if I can get both car there, use on in the auto-x the other for the free runs and see which you like better.'

Enjoy....
