Question Electrical clicking sound from below the glovebox?

In the 944S2 cab I'm getting an annoying clicking sound that goes away when I press the A/C button.

I've traced the sound to a part that PET describes as "electric motor" and seems to be attached to the A/C evaporator. PET actually shows 2 versions of this part, a 60º unit and a 98º unit. Part numbers are 944.624.119.00 and 944.624.120.00, respectively.

Anyone had this happen before? Solutions? TIA

I have heard the sound your talking about in a couple of the 944's I have owned, but I have never gone in to investigate it. Seems like I have always read/heard that it was normal or common.

Thanks Colin. This sound is too loud to be normal, since it's constant and loud like a relay going bad.

I also had this sound on two of my cars except that it didn't go away when the a/c button was pressed and would happen at unpredictable times. Sometimes going over a bump in the road would set it off and sounded like a relay 'chattering'. Did not investigate further and the sound just stopped one day.

The clicking noise is probably the cruise control. There's a plug in the engine compartment right behind the glove box. Disconnect it and see if the clicking goes away.
If it does, then take the cruise cont. unit apart and clean the pcb. It will probably correct it.

No cruise fitted, also the sound is definately from inside the bulkhead in the glovebox area.

Hey guys, this clicking used to drive me absolutely insane. It is the automatic climate control solenoids. My '87 did it on occasion, most often on humid / hot days and the clicking always went bezerk down one bumpy road by me. Never did find a fix for it.

Thanks guys. I physically traced it to that small "electric motor" on the evaporator illustrated in the PET catalog under the part numbers I referenced in the opening post.

The question is whether I can just replace that small but hugely expensive part with a used one to make the noise go away?

Keep the top down and the radio up. that got rid of all the squeaks and rattles in my firebird convertible.

seriously, have you tried to take apart the old part to see whats making the noise?

My car does the same thing..... both part numbers are found at DC automotive for $55

I'm going to diagnose a little more to find out exactly what it is.....but if you guys are sure, then DC seems to be the spot.

My car only clicks when first started in the morning. It clicks in the glove box for a few min. Also, when I press the AC button it blows the fuse instantly....and it doesn't just pop the fuse, it melts the little wire inside to a nub....so its a big short. Could they be related, or is this different?

Okay, I just got back from doing some tinkering after running a couple of searches in the forum which suggested disconnecting the climate control unit and reconnecting it. Apparently, people have replaced the solenoids (the part I was referring to in the opening post) and had the same clicking come back a year later, so it's probably related to the climate control unit itself and not the solenoids.

Some people found that turning the temperature dial around the 18ºC mark in summer instead of minimum makes the clicking go away. Keeping the climate levers a a bit more centered is supposed to help eliminate the clicking as well.

I just disconnected the climate control unit and reconnected. So far the clicking is gone. Let's see how long it lasts!

I've had the same clicking noise in my 88 944, 87 951 and my 95 968. On both the 944 and 951 I cleaned the grounds at the back of the head and never heard it again. I haven't gotten to cleaning all of the grounds on the 968 yet... This may only be in my case, so hopefully disconnecting and reconnecting will work for you!

Can you give a brief "how-to" on that? Do I need to take the climate control unit out of my dash? (est. time?)

The popping the fuse is worrying me....especially with all the stories on here of electrical fires.

As mentioned cleaning the contacts on the back of the climate control can make a difference...or as some note disconnecting then reconnecting...which does the same thing- basically.

OK....WTF is that board, and how do I get to it.

I'm almost sure thats my problem. I have no hot/cold adjustment (both "clips" are fine), and I too thought I would had to jump my low pressure switch to get the compressor running. Its clear thats not the answer. When I do jump them, they get to hot to touch, and the fuse gets popped.....like POPPED (melts the little filliment to a nub).

I don't mean to be a dick, but Testsrossa please, write more on this!! Explain what you did, and how.
