Default 95 968 OBDII ?

Hey all,

I just bought a '95 968 and was wondering if it is OBD II and, if so, were is the DLC? (Data Link Connector)

I have an airbag light and an ABS light on. Of course the the speedometer is not working so I am assuming the problem stems from there.

I'm guessing that the reset procedure for the airbag is the same as the 944. As far as the ABS I don't know.

It would be just be nice to be able to hook my scan tool up to a Porsche for once!

Thanks in advance!

, Bill

OBDII started in 1996.

The abs wheel speed sensors are used for the speedometer feed in the 968, and is probably the common link between the ABS and speedometer issue. Check for a failed wheel speed sensor, in particular I think it's the front right wheel that controls the speedometer.

Its the left front. I've broken the left front hub on my race car several times, and it always disables the speedometer by moving the ABS ring out of alignment with the wheel speed sensor.

Thanks guys!

I did visually check all of the speed sensors at the wheels today. They appear okay, but that's not saying much. I'm wondering if I can swap sensors from wheel to wheel to see what happens.

By chance, are the sensor rings in the rotors? The car has new front rotors that may be incorrect.

I also believe that the air bag light may be related as well. It also needs a speed reference...

I need to get a manual. Is the manual available on cd?

Thanks again!

If the ABS computer is disconnected or on the fritz it will also take out the speedo and ABS.

Jim - have you really broken multiple hubs? Wow, I imagine you must have upgraded them now. I haven't had the pleasure of that yet.

No, the rings go around the inboard part of the hub. This is why they get misaligned when the hub breaks.

Most manufacturers submitted certain vehicles in 95 for OBD2 testing, but it was manditory in 1996.

Yes, I've broken three of them, all on the left side. The stock M030 hubs are known to be weak. I've seen at least a half dozen other M030 hub failures on various PCA stock class 968/951S/944 S2 cars.

Are you running M030 hubs? You might be less susceptible to failure since you've been running so much lighter than the PCA stock class cars.

I've upgraded to billet hubs, and I'd recommend that you do the same if you're running the stock M030 hubs. At the very least you should carry a spare to avoid a ruined weekend.

Yes, I'm running M030 hubs and I don't have a spare. You making think hard about the billet ones.

Many more right hand turns on the tracks that I run. Putnam Park for example is 8 right turns and 2 left.

The airbag light is not reset the same way as a 944. In fact, the 968 airbag light is a huge source of frustration among 968 owners. The only way to reset the light is with a OBD-I scantool like the Bosch "hammer". Some sites sell homemade scantools for Porsche obd-I ports which will work as good as the hammer or better, for about $3-700. But you can only use it on your Porsche. Some people figured out a DIY for making your own socket and software to connect your laptop to the obd port and reset the light yourself.

Or you can take it to a dealer and they'll reset it for you for a nominal fee. But don't forget you need to fix the problem, because when you reset the light, it will just come back again if there is really something wrong with one of your airbags. Some people like to bypass their airbags with a 1.5 ohm resistor.

The obd port is below the glovebox, by the side.

Thanks Arash.

I would definately be interested in a home made scantool. Even for 3 or 400 I believe it would pay for itself. Plus anyone that is interested in using it on thier car locally would be more than welcome to it.

If you have any more info this please let me know. If not, I'll start searching.

Thanks.

Here's all the info I have on the 968 obd tools out there:

- http://www.durametric.com/buyus.aspx - the $296 version will work on 3 vins. The $697 version is unlimited.

- http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/diag%5CDiag.htm - this guy's in Europe but it's unlimited, and less than $697.

- http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=3684&st=0 - the homemade version. You will need some skill in electronics, and some luck finding some components. I am very very very eager to get my dumbass airbag light turned off as well so let me know if you have any luck with any of this.
