Default Poss trade for 968 Coupe- 929 Euro or A6 4.2L

Just contemplating- but doing so seriously.

Have a '83 928 EURO S, well sorted but not a showcar. Rare Euro, 5 spd. Just turned 80K miles.

Also have a 2002 Audi A6 with the 300HP V8, Sport and Premium packages, just under 120K miles. Black/tan, very solid presents well.

May be interested in trade for 968 Coupe. Must have solid maintenance history, not a big fan of bright red. Considering tip or stick given my new diggs in the city here. 928 is in Mass, Audi is in Va.

PM or email if any interest.

The Audi is definitely a better choice! Sorry, I'm just sick of early 928's. Beautiful cars, though!

No kids in my immediate future, though possibly some job headaches.
I looked at the S4 but too small, 2.7T A6 will actually put out more power with an aggressive chipset...
But I wanted the V8 growl and torque from displacement-- and true to reports the thing has been a tank. Looks and drives new. Unreal.
The Euro 928 (oops, not 9) Does hustle (yes, 300HP) and the CIS system is really great considering no electronics. This car is a lightweight- no sunroof, no cruise etc. It's got its own great brand of hustle but the 300HP from the 4.7L comes largely from cams and intake so it's happiest singing in the higher rev ranges. I don't find much opportunity to do that, sadly.
Audi was for sale previously in the for sale thread...quick search should turn it up...any serious interest and I'll pass it on for the current loan balance.

be warned! S4 and A6's are NOT problem free!

the biggest issues (which happened to mine) were turbo's and 1st/2nd/R syncros going!

the turbo's are easy. once K03's go out, buy a set of K04's and get a stronger clutch/light weight flywheel. then get the fueling kit. for about $5k you can have a monster sleeper with around 400whp and with a good driver easy 11 in 1/4 - keep in mind! this is AWD! no spinning. THESE THINGS GO!

the 2nd gear syncro problem is VERY common on the 6-speed 2.7T's - not all cars had them, but there are a few out there with them. some show up early. mine waited untill 110k miles and my car wasn't even chipped. once fixed though, it's like turbo's - bullet proof.

there are people who have had k04's for over 50k miles, and people with Stage 3+ cars (K04 upgraded 2.7T's) with almost 200k miles without an engine rebuilt.

These things are NOT slow. Mine stock kept up with a Viper, Ferrari, and a 911. I stopped bothering with Mustangs/Camaros/Corvettes.

the 4.2 V8 is really awesome too. But there aren't any mods for it. you could do a 6-speed swap if you are up to the task, and it will be a REAL highway screamer though! there is also a supercharger kit available, but it costs a fortune. Vast Perfomance has done the 6-speed swap with the 4.2 into A6.

Many people feel affraid of 2.7T's maintenance, and turbo's, and transmission - but its like anything else, take care of it, and it will be fine. and if it breaks, then its just inevitable and there's nothing you can do about it. most cars are fine. and timing belt failures etc. are extremely rare.

personally, if I lived in a lot of stop and go traffic, and no room to do the work on the car - I would get the 4.2

otherwise, 2.7T is just a TON more fun!

mine is still sitting here @ parent's garage, waiting for mechanic to come back from vacay and finish fixing it. (bleeding the clutch and doing a few more things), after that we'll be deciding whether to sell it, or keep it and maybe I'll have a highway monster of my own

also, as common as the syncro problem is, please don't buy an automatic 2.7

Audi should have never made 2.7 with auto/tiptronic - those things are HORIBLE compared to manual!

That's part of the reason I went with the 4.2L
Plus I prefered the styling with the flared fenders and wider stance. And that exhaust tone once it's opened up a little! 4.2L that are trans/ecu chipped don't give up much at all to 2.7Ts, I just didn't invest the $ in mine. If I had it to do over, I'd get the tip-chip, but not ECU. Had my fun with other 'twins', the A6 variant didn't do it for me. The S4 was more responsive and held more promise once the powerplant was goosed a bit, but it was too small for me. Like I said, mine's been bulletproof, no repairs just maintenance and getting close to 120K.

Default I have a 4.2 and

a 951. If you want a sport's car or enjoy the twisties, forget the 4.2. The H-sport bars are a big help, as is vag-com trans coding 000032. You'll figure out what that is if you get one.

I love the 4.2 as a solid commuter, it has plenty of power and is a very comfortable cruiser due to the ultra smooth 40valve V8. No grunts required, it does what you ask.

However, if you like to mix it up on the corners, you will always be disappointed. I've done some 4 wheel burnouts here and there and it can **** and get when redlined through the gears using the tiptronic shifter, but slowing down quickly or turning are not strong suits. The HP2 brakes are pretty incredible, but remember the car weighs in over 4000lbs. My seat of pants mad up scale skid pad says it's 50 times tighter than a buick roadmaster, but 30 times looser than a well set up 944.

In all, I love the car and being able to stomp on the loud pedal when necessary, but get in the 951 when I'm in the mood to kick *** (or save gas!)

Maintenance can be a bit expensive if you've got to go to the dealer and the all wheel drive system eats tires on the 4.2

Check audiworld.com for more info.

yeah Audiworld and Audizine have tons of info

the 2.7 is more for a tuner; there are many parts to upgrade - turbos, tuning, intercooling setups, you name it! the only thing is, with a 2.7T you HAVE to get a manual , because an auto/tip is just simply crap

the 4.2's (stock for stock) are just as fast, but are a lot less maintenance wise - just keep up with oil changes and timing belts (+ w/e else car needs obviously)

my 2.7T had HP2 brakes (I got lucky? not all had them!) and they were great, that car was/is awesome, very comfy, roomy, with tons of power, but yeah its big and heavy; definetly not an auto-x car or anything like that, but its a real highway cruiser!

I just loved the "almost instant" power of it and the 6speed

I wished Audi made a 4.2 with a 6-speed, that would have been seriously awesome!

the only things to consider are: do you need the room? gas milage? auto or manual? are you driving it in winter (do you REALLY need AWD-all-the-time?)

other then that, the 2.7T's can be made very fast and be a total sleeper! I can't even begin to tell you how many "street races" I have won simply because people underestimated what it can do - especially from a roll; it's a boat and not as fast as many cars at the track in 1/4, but from a dig those 2 snails and AWD made that thing go!

for a problem free daily driver, a 4.2 is much better! and those wide fenders and nice wheels make it stand out IMO, that's the route I would have gone with if I could do it all over again; then get an exhaust, suspension, sways, wheels, and a chip - and enjoy it!

btw, between the two (4.2 and a 2.7T) is like asking whether to get a 944 or a 944T (951)

maintenance and perfomance wise

one is cheaper to maitain and peforms really well, the other is a much better performer but at the cost of maintenance
