Stereos.....
Hello everyone,
I am currently not an owner of Porsche i drive a Camaro myself but that is not what i want to talk about.
I have seen a few topics pertaining to aftermarket cd players, speakers, etc. I am VERY into stereos and anyone that has any questions about what they should go with please let me know. I will be honest and unlike most audio dealerships I wont tell you to buy the most expensive item for sale.
Hope to see some post from you users in the future.

Matt K

Feel free to critique my favorite starting off point for 944 stereo upgrades (my lil web page):

I'm always looking for stuff to add.

Tremelune and other Rennlist Users,
If I may recomend some of the better audio equipment for your vehicles for those of you that want good stuff no matter the cost.
Head Units:
~Alpine: range from $160 on up
~Pioneer: range from $140 on up
~Kenwood: range from $130 on up
Those Head Units are the best I have found on the market once again there are a few other and if you do have an extreme interest in any other just feel free to ask. All the prices are based on Crutchfield.com 's pricing. I installed a Kenwood for my girlfriend in her car and for the money i will say WOW!!! it has both looks and sound quality. I myself live Alpine I have an Alpine Head Unit and i wood trade it ONLY for another Alpine. Once again it is whatever your budget can handle.
Replacement Speakers:
~Alpine:
4x6 Plates - $140
4x6m - $90
~Pioneer:
4x6m/4x6 - $50-$100
~Memphis:
4x6 Plates - $120
These speakers are all available from Crutchfield.com once again, except for the Memphis ones....they are the ones i currently own and i LOVE THEM! they come with "crossover cutoff" which means if you or sumone else accidentally turns the music up too loud the it will shut the speaker or tweeter off until the distortion level is brought down. I myself do recomend these b/c it is a great safety feature. Budget once again though. If anyone has a great interest in the memphis speakers i cana arrange buying them and arranging shipping etc. for you if you do not have access to them in your area.
If anyone has interest in subwoofers, amps, etc. let me kno and i willpost info for you. I am willing to ask any of my buddies if you ask about any other equipment that they have used and that i havent i will also do the research on the items too.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!!

Are you sure you don't mean a circuit breaker? A crossover is a device that limits frequency to a speaker. IE-A subwoofer with an 80Hz low-pass crossover would only play 80 and lower. BTW, where are the memphis speakers? I couldn't find them at crutchfield......

I like this guys choices so far. I have the Pioneer Premire in my car and the 4x6 pioneer plates in the front and the memphis 4x6 plates in the rear.
You are right the speakers have circuit protection to shut them down not a cross over. The Pioneer head unit has an adjustable cross over so you can pick the cutoff points for front rear and sub.
I have personally loved the speaker choices. For the money the Memphis speakers are great. But you are right they are not in Crutchfields catalog, Igot mine from Car Audio Masters.

I recently added a Kenwood head unit in my 89, and with the factory speakers it is AWESOME! The factory piece just wasn't cutting it anymore. The beauty is, this unit plays MP3's, which means you can make them yourself with a CD burner and fit 190 songs..(yes, that is not a missprint..190) songs on ONE CD! It's like having a whole jukebox on one CD. I original went with Kenwood because I have a Kenwood changer that was going to go in a cubbyhole, but now that I've got a whole jukebox in the dash I don't need the added weight.
I'm a sucker for originality but in the case where original doesn't do the job I'm fine with this excellent upgrade.

I'm not big into stereos, but I like to listen to music when driving. I put the following into my 1986 944:
Blaupunkt Honolulu CD/receiver
Blaupunkt PCxi462 4X6 speakers in both front and rear
Total cost $310 from Crutchfield. That includes all the shipping, etc.
Installation of everything except the rear speakers was easy, rear speakers weren't too bad. I am super happy with the results. It plays clearly to volume levels more than sufficient to cause permanent damage to the sensory receptors in my cochlea.
Kudos to those who want to get into amps, subwoofers, etc., but this is more than enough for me. One reason I went with Blaupunkt was just to keep with the Porsche/Blaupunkt theme. Plus, I've had a Blau tape deck before that I liked very much.
The one thing that does annoy me, however, is the fact that the lights don't dim when the headlights are turned on. I think this is due to lack of wiring from the car, not an issue with the receiver.
Cheers,
Mark

Our cars have no dimmer wire (that I know of).
So all of these speakers fit? I thought the Blau's had issues with tweeter protrusion.
BLK, you say those are the speakers in your car? I haven't checked out the specs on them, but I can only assume they're too deep for the front doors without modification...pretty much everything else is.

Tremelune,
The Alpine Plates are not as big with the mahnet so those wood probably be your best bet....the memphis's might require mods but WELL worth it.
I am a guy that values SOUND QUALITY not neccessarily ALL bass. That is why i wanan help you guys out b/c most of you like your easier listening while still being able to hear the engine.

As far as the fit of the speakers, it depends on your definition of "fit." After installing the speakers in the front, I went to install the stock 944 grille, and tweeter protrusion prevented a proper fit of the grille. See another recent thread started by "Operater," and you'll hear the same story. My solution was to put the original 944 grilles aside and use the grille's that came with the speakers. I guess I would prefer the stock grilles, but the Blaupunkt grilles look nice.
Fitment of speakers in the rear was no problem at all.
