Default Engine just quit went around a curve and it Died !!

Engine just quit went around a curve and it died. Ok I have replaced the dme two months ago and I changed the dme relay and fuse all at the same time. It has been running great went around a curve at about 10 mph and it just died flat no sputtering or nothing. I was able to push it to a parking place so thats is where it sits now. I have a little over 1/4 of a tank and just in case I put a another gallon in. It just cranks cranks cranks it sounds good when it does as in no funky sound while cranking but, won't start. Any thoughts not sure what it is maybe fire or fuel. where should I start ? Thanks a bunch. 87 944 n/a 5 speed This just happened at 3 pm today Fri 6-13-08

check reference sensor connections, That and fuel pressure.

Is the tach bouncing when cranking if not it is the reference sensors most likely

also search is good but I'm being nice

Check the viewport at the front of your cam cover and make sure you haven't stripped or broken a timing belt. Other than that, check for spark by removing each spark plug wire one by one from its associated spark plug, insert a spare spark plug into the wire, ground the spare plug against the engine block, and look for spark as someone else cranks over the engine. ALL plugs must have spark. Second, after cranking over the engine a few times, crack the big nut at the front of the fuel rail a few turns and fuel should spurt out under high pressure. if it does not, you have fuel delivery problems. Once you narrow your problem down to fuel or spark, further diagnosis and repairs will be within reach.

Reference sensors. Not the sensors but where they plug into the wiring harness. Take one of the plugs and pull the rubber boot back off the plug and tell me how many of the 3 wires are broken.

Did your tachometer needle jump when engine did not start. If reference sensor is bad then needle would not jump. Info about reference sensors http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/ign-02.htm

If the needle jumps check if the engine gets fuel and spark.

Since the car restarted, you can skip the timing belt check. However, determining if it is a fuel or spark issue will go a long way to resolving the problem. That being said, the symptoms suggest DME relay or bad ref/speed sensor connections. Replace the DME relay... if that is not the problem, you'll have a spare for when it IS, its cheap and easy insurance for about $30. Check the ref/speed sensor connections as trivgar mentioned, they're another likely possibility. Third reasonable possibility is the DME itself. There was a recent thread on repairing cracked solder joints that you might want to search for.

sounds like your speed and ref sensors are shorting somewhere.
