Post OT - Cable Modem/WIRELESS

Hello,

I know that about 75% of you are computer people, and about 20% are engineers. I am in good company for the info I want then.

I am *finally* foing cable modem, and wish to not rent some POS from *** cable. Therefore, I wish to buy a very nice cable modem to hook up to the RJ. I also wanted to look into wireless, so that I can run a laptop from the living room.

What are your recomendations, ideas, etc? Every opinion is welcome.
Thank you and I can move this OT if it gets too long.

D-Link has good products, have installed a few of them and am using one of their gateways at home..

Their entire range was not even worth looking at a few years ago but now they are top-notch in their price range.

<a href="http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/di714p+/" target="_blank">This</a> is what I would recommend to you.

It has all you requested and a print server as well, the firewall is pretty basic but works well.

I have a Terayon TJ110 Cable modem which I like very much. It's very fast. I have heard good things about the Toshiba PCX1100U docsis cable modem.

For more info go to <a href="http://www.dslreports.com." target="_blank">www.dslreports.com.</a> You can find excellent info there in their forums.

Forgot to ask you what sort of connection you are getting, if it isn't ethernet you'll need a modem as well. <a href="http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/dcm200/" target="_blank">Maybe this one?</a>

Remember I sell and install these things in Sweden and they work well with our ISP's...

Good thing with the D-Link wireless products is that you can add a beefier antenna if you need it.

Terayon TJ615, it's the standard modem after the latest system-wide (comcrap) upgrade. It does it's job, but it's nothing special.

I was hoping "wireless" meant the real thing, nobody's gotten a real working system in the NYC market yet, bankruptcy has come to those who tried.

I will be acquiring a Cable service in California called *** Cable. I have a Dell Laptop with a NIC. 10/100 I assume.

See, I did LII and LIII desktop support for 7 years, but not since LAST year, so I feel OL (Out of the Loop).

Thanks, I will check these things, but just to review:

I will be recieving a broadband signal through a regular round cable (like TV, I call it RJ 8). I assume that a "cable modem" will take this and then I will be able to connect my NIC to it with with some RJ 45?
Now, I also wanted to get some wireless capability, since it will be just as quick as land-lined, as *** MAY give 1.5Mpbs, and a wireless setup will get at least 10. Am I right so far?

So I have, actually, two needs. Will one unit fulfill both?

TIA&lt;

Nope, you'll need a modem, a gateway and a wireless gateway. The two last are available in a combo.

Sounds like you will need a cable modem, wireless hub and a wireless NIC for the laptop, unless your current NIC is already wireless. The cable to your house is likely RG-6 or RG-59, RG-8 is about twice the diameter and is used mostly for low-power communications under 500 MHz although I have one customer who uses it for their 2-way Vsat system.

Okay, so I need the cable modem, and that will connect conventionally, and then I will also need to connect that same modem to a wireless unit?

Yep, and then a wireless nic in the laptop..

What you need:
<a href="http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/dcm200/" target="_blank">Cable modem</a>

<a href="http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/di714p+/" target="_blank">Gateway with wireless</a>

<a href="http://www.dlink.com/products/digitalHome/wireless/11b+/dwl650+/" target="_blank">NIC</a>

I've got a 3Com cable modem plugged into a Linksys wireless router with a built in 4 port hub.
Get a Linksys wireless NIC for the laptop and you're in business.
Setup is pretty easy and straightforward. Works like a champ.

On another note, have any of you tried the new <a href="http://www.vonage.com" target="_blank">Vonage </a>IP telephone system? I got it a couple of months ago and it is great. Excellent voice quality and unlimited nationwide minutes for $39.99/month. No dealing with local or long distance phone companies. Awesome!

Standard disclaimer: Not affiliated with company. Just a happy customer.

Hey. This was my 400th post.
It figures that there is not an ounce of Porsche content involved. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

Is a speech customary? Well first of all I'd like to thank the academy... <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

I dumped *** a few years ago and went to satellite, I like the dish MUCH better, digital quality-one hundred channels-for the same price as regular cable, $40 a month.
You live in technoland (San Diego) there are likely several hundred internet providers in your area that can supply you with a high speed internet connection. You may want to consider your options. What does *** cost compared to dish plus DSL?
Anyway if you are sold on *** do you know what hardware they provide? Are you getting the digital phone/TV/internet package? If you are I would think the would provide some kind of distribution in the house. That is to say I think they provide more than pulling a COAX to your house and say here ya go.
I honestly don't know I have not checked out there system but you may want to get more info from them.

i have a motorola surfboard 4200 modem, i like it, its what comcast gave me actually $5 a month, but if i ever havea problem they replace it, its worth it... D-link does make good product there getting really good reviews in all the mags. About hooking your modem into your comp. if you dont have a NIc card most of the cable modems will also hook up via USB.

just my .02
