Default 944 Power Steering Problem

I get a grinding noise and some stiff steering on my 89 944 with a 2.7. I put in three different power steering pumps so im convinced its not a pump problem. Ive bleed the sysytem and the reservoir is clear no bubbles. The lines are not kinked either. I dont see any leakage from the rack. Any ideas on what to check next.

I remember reading that one of the hoses can become "sucked in" due to age and wear causing steering effort to be increased. You may not have a kinked hose, but it should be colapsed internaly which would make it hard to see.

also look at the bearings on the tops of the strut towers, if those are corroded they would be hard to turn. mine were.

I second the collapsed hose suggestion. Replace the hose from the reservoir to the input of the power steering pump. Mine collapsed where it went through the hose holder connected to the water pump. The collapse is not visible from the outside but it was there on mine. Another rennlister had the exact same problem recently and a new input hose fixed his too. The new hose is shorter and there is a new fitting that connects to the pump to accomodate the new host routing.
