E codes and 80 / 100 W bulbs + harness have worked great for me. I like HID's but like to keep the 944's lights more "period correct". For purchasing Hella lights I've been using these guys for years:

as long as you use a relay harness and do not have the HID powered off the original headlight harness, you are perfectly fine.

a custom wiring harness is pretty easy to make if you know what youre doing.

i made one that gets power directly from the alternator and those sumbitches are brighttt. i soon will upgrade to 100W bulbs from the 55W i have now and plan on lighting up the world.

I know a half-dozen people who have them and are happy. Sometimes a part fails (not common) but the kits are so cheap you can buy a whole kit to keep as spares. I have seen failures with OEM HID bulbs and ballasts so I do not expect perfection in the aftermarket either.

I ran two fused wires from the battery (fused inline very near the battery) for my HID's as I did not want one short to take out both sides. Other than that, it was an easy installation. The high/low solenoid controller plugs into the stock headlight harness.

I bought a kit for my 968 but the stockers are so nice I have not bothered to install it yet. Maybe this fall.

bad link

the reason u need a harness is because the amount of current needed to power up a HID kit is usually much more than the stock harness is rated to handle. much less a stock harness after 20 years. if you don't use a harness, you're going to run all those amps thru the original harness and possibly start an electrical fire.

So I'm curious if anyone has done an H4 DOT conversion and used Silverstar or Silverstar Ultra bulbs instead of stock halogen bulbs. How's the performance?

with that kit, u still need a harness. and a harness isn't some magical device. it's just a standard bosch relay with a socket, a wire to your batterym, a wire to ground, and a wire to your stock headlight harness.

you can make it at home depot yourself. although the relay socket you might have to get at an auto store.

I have the Silverstar 7" (H6054/6024?) sealed bulbs and they are definitely better than stock, but nothing compared to xenon. Stock wiring harness also.

If you need more light than E-code/80w-100w/Rennbay Harness offers you are probably blind, they are that bright.

I installed the above mentioned parts, along with upgraded battery cables and a supplemental ground, on ritzblitz's car, and although I knew the light output would be good I was surprised at how good it actually was.

The 944online.com HID kit is just an overpriced ebay kit, and it is not even bi-xenon, but they don't tell you this, all they say is "Note You will not need the High Beams as the Xenon's are much more brilliant." You can get the same thing on ebay for less than $100. I wonder how many people have wasted their money on it.

I used the Rennbay kit and Silver Stars. I also took the fogs apart, took the little metal shroud that goes in front of the bulb out, installed 100w bulbs and put on new lenses. The Silver Stars work nicely, but now my fogs are bright enough to drive with by themselves. You probably will need to re-aim the fogs so they don't shine to high ( into oncoming drivers eyes )
