For my money, the Wilwood's are the best option. Had cumulated 2 sets of the '86 Turbo brakes with spindles, sold them all in favor of the Wilwoods.

Over the last 7 years, have raced with the stock NA brakes, with the 928S4 brakes, and the Wilwoods. The Wilwwods are a substantial improvement over the NA brakes. No comparison really. Stopping power power is scary. Cannot be out braked going into a corner. Plus I can get the pads cheaper then for the NA stock pads. Additionally the Wilwood caliper and pads are 6 lbs lighter then the NA stock set up. That's a huge savings for unsprung weight with a corresponding improvement in being able to keep the tire on the ground.

The Wilwoods stop every bit as good as the stock Turbo brakes and the weight difference is even greater then with the NA Stock. Price difference on pads is greater here also with the Wilwoods.

With the Wilwoods you need to change nothing with your suspension. They just bolt right on. Same rotors, struts and spindle. It's about a 30 minute install.

And no problem with bias front to back with Wilwoods and stock rear brakes.

And maybe the best for me, I didnt need to go out and buy different wheels as my 15 inch factory wheels fit right over the Wilwood calipers. Saved tons of money keeping my 15's.

That's my dimes worth.

944cup, out of curiousity (and an interest to learn as much as possible about all the options for brake upgrades), what was involved with the 928S4 brakes? Did you have to change spindles/hubs?

I'm definitely interested in the wilwood setup (esp. because I could keep my sweet slotted rotor setup up front and its getting a lot of rave reviews) but I just want to be sure that I also understand the pros and cons of the various other options so I don't kick myself later wishing I had bought brake setup x, y, or z. I'm not too concerned about complexity (because even swapping spindles isn't really THAT complicated) or what's "necessary" - I want to learn more about what's possible, what works (ie on my 924S, would the Racer's edge adapter work with Big Reds and Lindsey's floating rotor setup for the 86 turbo?)

Thanks!

For the S4 brakes, I didnt do the actual swap as the car I bought came with them.

oh...was there any adapter or anything like that on them? Did you go from 928S4 brakes to Wilwoods?

Thanks!

Eventually sold the 944 with S4 brakes with those brakes on them. Wanted to get away from the 16 inch wheels. No adapter was used on that set up.

I installed the Wildwood's on 2 of my other early 944 race cars.

I am in the process of moding the stut holes to get my NA adjustable coilovers on. It seem scary too remove 1/2 material at the top so I am trimming at the bottom and welding around the seem to get the strength back.

Anybody else have comments? Seems like if you elongate the top you loose any adjust ability.

A long time ago I elongated the early strut holes to work with the 951 spindle and found cracks after a few events. Ended up using the correct 951 struts instead. I wouldn't recommend cobbling it together like that. Others have and will disagree with me, but that is my opinion based on experience.
