Unhappy Very strange noise...

I have the weirdest noise coming from the back, driver's side of my car. It sounds like someone hitting something against plastic. I thought something was caught in the wheel or rubbing against it so I took it off and nothing. I checked the fenders and such to see if anything was loose but everything seems fine. It onlt really taps when its under acceleration and the clutch is engaged. I revved the engine in place and it wasn't that. It stops in between shifts which I thought was odd. Does anyone have any idea what it could be???

Sounds like you've got CV Axle problems. Mine just started. There are a couple of choices:

They are rebuilt w/1 yr. warrenty. Or:

They're not that difficult to replace. You need a cheesehead socket and a good long socket wrench.

Use the search button to find replacement hints and procedures.

Well I was kinda hoping it would be something cheap like a loose fender or something. Oi! I really need to take this car off the road so I can really work on it.

Hey Dan.. You may wanna put it on a rack and into gear to define where the noise is exactly coming from..
Noise does travel thru metal and the exact source is difficult to determine from the cabin. My wheel bearings were just the case- soundes like a grinding from underneath..

Good luck- keep us informed..
Man your car looks good with that stripe!!!

Check the CV joints. Other problems could be the clutch, trany and the torson tube.

I think in the last thread about spare cars I mentioned the disposable chevy sprint. For $300 you get a running car that gets 50mpg and by the time you fix the car, you can get your money back selling the car and saved enough for gas to pay for the CV.

I think it might either be the clutch or the tranny. Because if I disengage the clutch the noise stops. Any idea which part it could be?

Could be the muffler bearing. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

You've heard the opinions, smart money is on CV joint (clicking from one side under acceleration, fairly classic symptoms), but nobody is going to diagnose it for sure over the internet. Time to get the jack and jackstands out....
