torquey and then the variocam kicks you in the *** at higher RPM with the aid of the fabulously complicated intake system.

The 968 engine's greatness and fame stems from the fact that, at the time, it had the most horsepower per liter of any production NA engine except the NSX (and it has friggin 2 less cylinders). And also that it has variable valve timing (like Honda's VTEC), has a convoluted intake system which causes intake pressure resonance, creating air charge at high rpm and providing itsy bitsy amounts of boost. On top of all that, it's the biggest 4-banger around, and it fits neatly into your 944 NA. And with a chip and catback, you can easily have 260 crank hp.

There are other things too. Compared to all the predecessor engines, like the 2.5, the turbo, the S2, etc. it has many improvements. Siamesed cylinders, oil squirters for the pistons, forged pistons & rods, reinforced chain tensioner mounts, hydraulic belt tensioner, etc. It is the pinnacle of achievement in front engine Porsches (as far as the motor itself). Too bad it's not turbo (or maybe that's a good thing).

Default Suabru to Porsche

Is it possible to swap a subaru engine, or an evo engine?

With enough time and money, sure. It'll fit. It'll cost 5-10X what it would to just rebuild the original Porsche engine, but you could do it.

Wow, this was an old thread!
With enough time and money, if it will physically fit in the allotted space, it can be installed.
I heard of an Isetta with an Allison V12 installed.
True story.

No, I checked. At least not without a lot of cutting and fab.

the Subaru engine is at minimum 4” wider than the frame of the 944 engine bay

...but a Subaru engine+trans would fit under the trunk floor, if you can build a custom rear suspension

I think a good percentage of the people that want to do motor swaps come here looking for responses such as 'oh, yeah, that motor will drop right in. All you need is $50.00 worth of bolts and hoses and you're done!'

I guess you can make anything fit, even spend a bunch of time and money to make it slower and less balanced

Gotta agree.
Even if there's a kit available (LS, GM V6, Chevy small block, soon-to-be VW 5cyl?)
Te amount of time/money/effort involved will be substantial.
Still finishing up my 1.8t swap... 2 years now, almost done. Except the engine won't run with that $#%@! AEM computer.

There is an outfit in Texas that will do a turnkey install for an LS3 (or perhaps better now) for about 10K. They might have a kit for DIY'ers by now. Ask Obduraninia?sp on here. He has one and swears by it. There is also another thread on here about a guy who was putting a VR6 engine into his 944..don't know if he ever finished it though. Used some Audi parts, as well I think. There's another guy here on the forum called Xschop who does a lot of custom machine work on a swap/rebuild. Haven't seen his posts in a while though. Threads might be available though.... BTW..whatever you do, don't use a Volvo or Saab engine. It's not the engine, it's their Swedish computer systems that are horrendous. A buddy of mine just had to scrap his V70 wagon because the engine and transmission computers wouldn't talk..Nobody could fix it without at least 1500 dollars worth of time to find out what was going on.And the shop he took it to even had the correct diagnostic protocols and works on Volvos all the time! Just sayin..hope this helps..
