What Non-PORSCHE Motors Will Fit in a 944?

will an S2 engine go into an early 944 n/a? Would you get the handling lightness of the early chassis with the power of the 3.0L? I'm sure this is answered elsewhere, but this thread is flowing now, so I thought I'd ask.

audi I-5's will fit nicely and match a porsche bellhousing, the land-rover v-8's also fit very nicely and are a close match to the bellhousing enabling you to use a similiar clutch/pilot bearing setup but im not sure on the specifics. I know its close though.
I wonder if BMW's I-6's would fit? or would they be too long and tall?

how about a 928 5 l 32 valve motor lol. I don't think it's worth putting a different motor in a 944 as you can just get a 951 and mod it, or get a S2 engine and turbocharge or supercharge the 3.0 l engine to get more power.
but I think a v8 engine in a 928 would be cool. I kind of like to have a porsche motor in a porsche so I wouldn't want a chevy powered 944, too odd for me.

A porsche engine in a porsche?!?! Come on. Porsche doesn't even do that sometimes. Besides I think Porsche is about evolution, excellence, and engineering mastery. It's consistent with the spirit of Porsche to swap to a motor that is bulletproof, powerful, and inexpensive... wouldn't you say?
Someone on the 951 board was showing pics of a friend's 951 in norway with an audi 5 cylinder engine. I think it was Norway. Anyway, the whole tunnel and firewall area near the tunnel had to be hacked to fit a supra gearbox right up there, and there was a lot of other miscellaneous hacking.
The S2 engine will easily drop into a 944. There's a guy named Tim here on rennlist who has a 924S racecar with a 968 engine, and it screams!

Granted the 968 motor is an engineering marvel (its sited in one of my textbooks on IC engines like every other chapter) it doesnt change the fact that you cant find one for less than 2K, and more like 3 or even 4K, which is how much an entire N/A 944 is worth. =(

Basically comes down to cost/benefit. Is it worth putting an engine from another make for xxx amount of power? Why go from a torque providing 2.5L to an 2.0L or 1.8L that doesn't have barely any torque? And most are too high to properly fit in the engine bay without serious modification and fabrication to the aforementioned firewall and engine support structure. A chevy motor makes sense due to low cost and easily available, as well as parts access ability and the weight being not much different than the factory motor.
It's been done, I recall reading about the conversion a couple times on Rennlist and Pelican Parts forums.
