Post 494: two additional speakers on rear shelf?

What does this option mean? I don't have two additional speakers that I can find.

Thanks,

I wonder if that's a 911-only option...don't they have a rear shelf behind the back seat? Seems like a bad place for speakers though as the engine would be right underneeth there....

I have no idea but I am pretty sure my 90 cab only has eight speakers (three in each door and a 4x6 in the rear body panel). I thought that mebe it was on the rear 'dash' where the top folds down but the only thing under that is the top motor.

According to the porsche option decoder:
Code Option Description
494 2 speakers on back shelf
494 Amplifier system

( <a href="http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp" target="_blank">http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp</a> )

Any ideas what this means?

Well, in my car there's 3 in each door, and 4 in the rear.

There's 2 in the standard places in the rear (well, I Haven't seen them but I assume they're there...I hear sound from there anyway...), and 2 above them right below the little quarter glass thing.

For a total of 10 speakers.

I can tell you that the 964 model of 911 has ( a possible an option) of two speakers on the back shelf. I saw one at the Porsche garage while I was waiting for them to finish a service on my car. I remember it being stange as they look only small and pathetic sitting in the back shelf. They are oval and probably 3x6 or somethihng like that! But if this is a 944 option code, I have no idea where that could be. There is no shelf that could support speakers that I have seen! The 10 speaker option is the highest available audio upgrade option I know of for the 944, which my car has.

Hmm. My car has this option and I think i've been through the whole car. I know I've taken apart the entire rear of the car while fixing my top mechanics.

Is there another page anyone knows of to describe the options from the option decoder?

I've removed that shelf in the course of replacing the automatic top transmissions and there are no speakers there...you could possibly fit shallow speakers there but it would be a mess...the rear shelf is pretty thick and there's not much depth for a driver.
