UGH! Cooling fan resistors and wires

I wanted to clean/replace the connections on the cooling fan resistors and discover that the wires were toast and I mean TOAST. I spliced on new wires about five inches higher but the wires are still quite stiff there too.
Has anyone completely replaced the wires to the fans?
Also, I broke some kind of thermal switch that was next to one of the resistors on the heat-sink. I've seen pictures of late cars(resistors above battery) running with and without these. What the heck is their purpose and are they needed? I did not break the on pictured but the opposite one if that makes a difference.
Anyone have one?
As for everyone else, CHECK YOU COOLING FAN RESISTOR WIRES. Serious fire hazards.

Keith, I'm curious if your cooling fans were cycling on and off before you spliced the wires?
I just replaced the connectors on my wires as the wires themselves were not too bad beyond that point.

My fans were not cycling on off rapidly but sometimes when the car was known to be warm they would not remain on after it was shut off.
Does anyone have a 951 thermal switch or am I going to have to buy the whole unit??

so these resistors I thought are for the heat/a/c blower control (1,2,3,4) or are they for the radiator cooling fans?

85.5-86 behind the glove box mounted under the battery tray. 87+ under the hood to the right of the battery near the cabin fan blower motor.
