Post Poll: Decide what I should do.

I cannot decide what tire sizes/brand to buy when I get my new wheels. Here are the choices:

1. 225/45-17 and 255/40-17 Bridgestone Re-730
2. 225/45-17 and 255/40-17 Kumho Ecsta 712
3. 235/45-17 and 275/40-17 BFG G-Force TA

Wheels are 17x8 front and 17x9 rear. Before you munchers start saying that 275 is too wide for a 9 inch wheel, please reconsider. We had a 35th anniversary Camaro SS at work today and they have 275/40-17 Goodyear F1 tires on 17x9 wheels stock that are FLUSH to the wheel [no bulge]!

Let me also add that all off these tires have GREAT treadwear characteristics. I don't care about ideal grip because I have a separate set of 16 inch wheels with Yokohama A-032R's for competition. The Re-730's have 300 treadwear and my neighbor's set has lasted 20k+ miles on his '96 Cobra and it looks like he's got half of his tread left. The BFG's have 400 treadwear [VERY impressive for a W-rated tire] and the Kumhos have a 30k mile warranty but I like them the least aesthetically. I'd like to hear your experiences with these tires and mileage if you have them, thanks!

What ever one you choose (1 2 or 3), if you chew thru tires like I do, you will be able to try all three with in the next 3 months or so. And then you can tell us which you perfer!

I would go with the Kuhmo, for what you pay for those tires they are incredible. Compared w/ SO3's or Pilots, they don't grip quite as well, but mine have show excelent wear characterstics (even w/ two track events), and the grip in the wet and they dry is good.

I have had 2 of the tires that you are thinking about, so here is a semi educated answer.
I personally do not like the Bridgestone 730's they are too loud on the road. They did do good at the last auto-x. I have 15k on this set and wish that they would wear out so I could get something else.
The BFG comp T/A ZR was a good comprimise tire that I liked all around. I got 30k on a set.

Hey Keith it is good to see you back. How did basic training go.

I would go with the BFG, unless Toyo makes those sizes for the T1-S

Dude
the treadwear ratings mean nothing!!!!!

treadwaer ratings are for comparison purposes only of tirs of the same manufacturer <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />
Sorry to shoot a major hole in your cost analysis <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

86951 - Hey man, thanks.

Unfortunately, my knees went. - then I went.
(Oh well, to tell you the truth, I think they wanted me to kill people)

Seriously, though, it's good to be back, broke, and trying to figure out what I'm doing next...
<img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

At least I know what kind of tires to buy!

Thumbs down

Those tests are done by the government, smarts. They give consumers like you and I an idea what we're spending our money on by comparing products to others across the board. I'll get less than 10k miles out of my 60 treadwear A032-R's, I get 15-20k out of my 160 treadwear AVS's, I got 8k miles out of my 140 treadwear S-02's, my neighbor is getting nearly 30k miles out of his 300 treadwear RE-730's, and Kumho offers a 30k mile warranty on their 280 treadwear 712's...don't make me spell this out any more clearly. I'll wager this much, though...the other tests the feds do with wet traction and high temperature durability are lame.
