Post Chevron Techron: To Use or Not to Use?

How does the list feel about the use of Chevron Techron on my '86 944 na? On page 49 of the owners manual it states not to use any additives. However, I have seen posts advising the use of a product such as Techron. What is the consensus?

I've been using Chevron with Techron ever since it came out, in all my vehicles and not a problem...

i'm pretty sure that awhile back someone on here said that techron is the porsche factory reccomended fuel additive. at least i hope someone said that, because i've been using chevron gas exclusively ever since. on the subject of gas, does anyone know why i can't find higher than 91 octane here in california? i bet it has to do with those damn liberals somehow...

I've used it a couple times over the past five months in my 86 951, no problems. My newly acquired certified porsche mechanic recommended it as well.

Okay, now the big question - do you feel that it has any noticible benefit? Or, is it like ALL the HP I gained with my K&N Filter? <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Hi Jeff:

Techron is NOT a performance enhancer. It is based on something called Stoddard Fluid which is a standard in the dry cleaning business. As such, it does a wonderful job of keeping deposits from building up on internal combustion components. I have taken engines apart and can tell by looking whether or not the individual has regularly used a product for removing deposits.

That being said, indirectly you might consider Techron a performance maintainer rather than an enhancer.

I love it. In New York State, Chevron gas was not available in the upstate area. I had to buy the additive form. Now I live in Tucson and there are a number of Chevron outlets. I go no other place for fillups!!

Cheers!!

I guess that's what I meant - Does it maintain performance like it claims it? I'll take that as a yes.

Thanks SO much for the quick replies and info everyone! Happy driving!

Jeff, if you've got loaded up injectors only taking them off and having them sonically cleaned and balanced will correct it. Cheap too, unless one is too bad to clean and must be replaced. Chevron gas with Techron is not the same as loading the Techron additive in the can to your tank. I believe the can gives you a higher concentration.

"bs" Your name is appropriate..."those damn liberals.." get a clue! this is an a porsche forum...I, for one, don't want to hear your politcal biases.

I have been using Techron - no hard, seems to be efficient and friendly to all my cars

Dan, I think that was a political joke, a laugh, not targeting/expressing any biases or particular people. Take it easy!

Thanks,
