If you're a college kid, I would stay away from the Miata. They are horribly impractical. How do you carry a keg and three sorostitutes back to your apartment is a Miata? How do you move all your stuff every summer? The 944 is more practical and there are even more practical choices in the same class like a GTI.

I fit three Mary Baldwin ladies in my dad's Miata with the top up. No room for the keg, tho.

I don't think a 944 can fit more passengers than a miata unless you are into midget women or you are a pedophile. My wife is 5'2 and she does not fit in the back of a 944 as her head hits the roof of the car. A miata is not a practical car if you have to move every summer. You need a U-Haul truck towing an enclosed trailer like mine so sell your 944 and get a bobtail since you are a college student.

lol, if you're a pedophile you should get an icecream truck. okay sorry bad joke, pedophiles aren't something to joke about.

but seriously the 944 is pretty practical. I put like half my room in my 944 (tv, computer, clothes etc) when me moved to another house lol.

if you're not commuting to college then it doesn't really matter how practical it is. If I wanted the most practical / cheap to run car I'd get a pontiac firefly, or geo metro. Those cars with a 1 litre 3 cyl motor must be really good on gas.

I had a chevy sprint, which got me 55 mpg. Yes I had one of those too I bought for $175 and drove my bank teller on a lunch date in it when I was younger (didn't really know her just asked her out on a whim). Manly or not, its not the car that makes the man. A 944 as a main driver is NOT practical as it costs about $1500 a year to properly upkeep/keep on the road unless you are like me with spare parts for 10 lifetimes and enough tools/knowledge to fix anything that can go wrong.

I miata can be bought and run for a few years on $1500.

well the past year I have just done oil changes as it all the maintenance is done on my car, but when I first bought the car about 2 years ago I have put 3 grand or more into it so far. if you buy one and spend the money to fix all the problems / maintenance it shouldn't cost that much to run.

I also think parts aren't too expensive on a 944 but I'm used to paying 40 bucks for a cap and 100 dollars for a wire set.

I sell auto parts at my work, and people complain about a wire set costing more than 40 bucks or other parts on most domestic and japanese cars are much cheaper.

bah, I'm a poor college kid, and i bought a $600 924s. I've dumped more money into it in the past year than i probably should, but i just don't care. Its been a great learning experience.

That said, the miata is a great car to drive. I've driven 2 different years and both were a blast. If you've made up your mind enjoy the car and hopefully you can come back to the 944 world at a later date.

Be careful lego. Last year i said the value of a 944 was about that of junk and a bunch of people here got their panties in a bunch.

reality is a 944 and a miata have values close to junk. the reactions of some people here make obama's statment sound tame!

Once you do your own clutch or cylinder head, the mystique becomes "how can these engineers be so stupid" and the presteige becomes "how can there be so many VW parts in this Porsche?"
Especially the engineer who decided that the oil pump drive sleeve should be perfectly machined to match the crank o.d., or maybe it's the fault of the guy who assembled it the wrong way. I've tried channel locks, curved-jaw vise grips, then eventually dropped the engine, oil pan, and oil pump to try and force the sleeve off. No go.

Of course, you can't drill or cut it, since it fits pretty far in the pump.

What a piece.

Read my sig Joel. I feel your pain. Tom, I don't think anyone here can challenge that statement about junk. I bought more than 10 944s running for less than $300 in the past. Since scrap steel is $200 a ton and our car weighs 1 1/2 tons, I bought them for less than what I get paid for SCRAP STEEL so irrefutably yes the 944 IS at the price of junk.

The last 914 I bought was for $200 running about 10 years ago. The current 914 I have sitting in the trailer I bought last week cost me $850 with $600 back registration fees and running condition unknown. Yes the 914 has been replaced. With the price of VW bugs and even jettas higher than a 944, I think a 944 is a poor man's VW.

$3000 in 2 years of use comes out to $1500 a year last time I checked.

that is only true for US 944.
ROW 944 are holding price well and it went up for atleast 30% in past 3 years.

miata prices are close to junk all over the world and will get worse every day for atleast another 20yr.

and I would really like to se miata that is able to carry this+2 people..

I really don't have anything against miatas, but the matter of fact is, that here in my country miatas are allmost exclusively owned by gay people. but than again gay people owns all sorts of porsches too..

Regarding the ulitily of 944s..

I can hit my entire drumset + a cab + 2 PASSENGERS in my 944 .. its tight.. but it works

I regularly transport 3 people (including me) and have done 4 in the past.

I'm also 6' and can sleep fairly well in the hatch of the 944 with the seats folded down. Can you sleep in the back of a miata?

Boy everyone here sure is afraid of the whole "gay" connection. The miata is a great car, and to let a silly hangup like that stop you from dirivng one is foolish, i'm glad the OP isn't going to let it stop him. besides, who cares if people think you are gay? Anyone who would assume you are gay because of the car you drive isn't worth the salt in your spit. I've had people call my car gay because of it's color. I even had one guy walk right up and say "when are you going to paint it?", but I can count those people on one hand, and they weren't people whose opinion holds alot of merit with me. Sheesh, don't be afraid to be yourself in anything you do, especially the car you drive.
