For such a great car (albeit not a hot-rod like a 951), the S2 seems to just be a huge value. I see so many on the market and most are sub-$8k asking price.

There are even several that are sub-$7k. Seems like a whole lot of car for that money.

What's the deal?

***it seems like the S2 cab is the only S2 that really demands a decent price.

I would love an S2 cab or 968 cab in my garage one day. For her of course >=) But I agree. I drove a customers s2 cab the other day and loved it. Even with the top up. Was a fun car to drive.

Just sold my 95 968 Cab with 64k miles. Bought an 88 951, will tell you the 968 was nice but that surge of power of the 951...really cool....

of course you post this after i put about 8k into the car in suspension, clutch that didnt need to be replaced, recaros etc. and of course after i pay 1300 to move it from long island to denver.

the problem with S2s and the value is the valves. at a mere 85 a pop, everyone is afraid of them. plus, by the time you put a clutch, belts and some other stuff in that 7k S2 you will have topped 14k, and be in boxster territory.

i am sorry i bought the short shifter that dominoed into the clutch. that was a ton of money that if not spent would have enabled me to sell the car for close to what i had into it (only had it a few months and drove it a few thousand miles) and possibly consider an elise. but throwing 7-8k into the S2 that i cannot see puts the elise that much farther out of reach.

and i preferred the S2 to the 951. I think jon made some mods to the 951 that will probably make me change my mind, so dont take my opinion as fact.

I really loved my S2, but realized that I couldn't get the power I wanted from it for less than a turbo. The S2's are great buys and are usually maxed out in the options, but as I found out selling a used one I got a lot of non-Porsche buyers comparing it to mustangs, vettes, etc. and wanted more power. It gets lost in the fact that 208hp just doesn't set it apart in the used sports car market. Now on the flip side, it makes one of the great buys to the person looking for an incredible 4 plug Porsche and would still be my choice over a Boxster, but like all 944's they just don't get the respect that the 911 gets in the used market.

people tend to ASK alot for the cabs..but experience tells me they do not change hands for anywhere near the price...

I hope that is not the case as I plan to put my cab on the market next week.

I just saw an S2 coupe with like 120K miles go for $11K. It had some nice upgrades and updates but it was also a Canadian model (KM). I guess it all depends on the market and more importantly the condition. A lot of those $7K cars have been neglected and as Tom points out can be a lot more down the road, where as if you can find one that some body has already spent the $ on then $11k is a good deal compared to the $14K and time it may cost you for that $7k car...jmo

What's the story with S2 valves? How often do they need replacement? How hard is it? Etc?

I have a 944 NA with 199k and AFAIK they don't have valve issues, so I'm trying to figure out what to expect if I got an S2.

Nothing wrong with the valves, probably what is meant timing belt goes then big damage to valves, hence very expensive to put right.
