Default Need a Kansas City Mechanic.....

Getting my car out of storage there tomorrow. I need to get my timing belt re-tensioned for the trip back to Chicago...it has around 1200 miles on it. They only have one dealer and was quoted $390.00!!!!! Should I wait until I get back...how important is the 1000 mile mark. Is it imperative?

Thanks,

BO

is it an early car or late car with the auto tensioner? and also you don't have to have teh belt re-ttensioned until the 2000 mile mark

85.5 n/a. Would doing it now be pointless?

IIRC you did the belt a while back so getting it retensioned before driving back to chicago would be cheap insurance. Imagine Auto is one of the BEST porsche shops around so I say do it.

It only has 1300k (just checked records...Nov 5th) since being replaced. Would I have to have it done again or would that be it? There are a ton of horror stories on here and I dont want to have one of my own.

What do you mean "have it done"

From what I remember, you replaced the belt a while ago time wise, and have driven 1300 miles on it.

My thinking is saying the car was driven 1300 miles, and HAS SAT IN STORAGE SINCE NOVEMBER, so before driving it another 500 miles across 3 states I would rather spend $95 at ONE OF THE BEST PORSCHE SHOPS IN THE COUNTRY to retension my belt (WHICH IS A REALLY GOOD DEAL). Another reason why I say this is while retensioning the belt if anything looks the least bit funny Karl will tell you, he posts here (PorscheDoc) and will not screw you over.

I know there are tons of horror stories on here, but these cars are not magical and dont eat timing belts. If the belt was replaced by someone who did it properly and knew what they were doing you will have no problems. There engines are very durable and last a long time.

Thanks...I guess I meant if you are supposed to wait 2000k would doing it prematurely mean it would have to be adjusted again. Say in another 1000k. I'm not a mechanic...sounds like a great shop. I'll have him give it a once over.

Any other time, I don't think a re-tension would be necessary right now, but since it has sat...it wouldn't hurt.

Sure you could probably make the trip without a hitch, but would you rather spend nothing and risk having to spend a lot, or spend a little and not have to worry about spending anything else?

For piece of mind - certain items on a car (such as gas, oil, rubber belts, hoses, seals, etc.) are affected not only by use but time - thus most oil changes are based on mileage and length of time between changing them out. Often sitting for a long time makes these items settle and stretch differently than a car that was at least started once a week. A trip from KC to Chicago is a good 16 hour roundtrip (I visit there often from KC) and I would definitely get iA to retension it.
