Default 944S worth?

I recently went to see a black 87(if I remember correctly) 944S that had a lot of work put into it and then sat for about 2 years, I think about ~120k miles (I definately forget), new clutch and brakes, a few other things. Exterior looks great except diff color black door and missing "s" on back. Assuming I'm buying it in non-running condition (even if it does), what's it worth? It needs a hatch seal and balljoints to my knowledge, belts and pumps were done before it came off the road. I have no clue about S's. Thanks.

+1...check the cam tensioner pads and belts...you'll know if its an S if is a dual cam too.

should have "16 Ventiler" badges on mid fenders too, along with same on airbox.

The airbox is 16 ventiler, saw a different intake manifold and few other underhood parts I didn't recognize, didn't see but wasn't looking for badges on fenders, there was the outline of an s on the back too. I offered the guy 1500 (figured why not) but haven't heard back, gonna see him tomorrow. How do I check the cam tensioner items, under belt covers?

If it was properly maintained and looks like the PO loved it I'd say go for it. Otherwise it could be a headache.

I'm real worried about that T belt that sat for 2 years, taking a set, drying out, stripping its teeth. And it's true you'll need to know the status of that chain tensioner - ~80K is about as long as as it should ever go I think, so if it's original it's pretty risky. Problem with checking that is you have to remove the valve cover, which is a piece of cake unless the bolts break - might be awkward if that happens before the deal closes.

New clutch, brakes, and water pump sure is nice. A well sorted S is a real pleasure, believe me. Might take several grand to get there, and you won't get much money back out of it (something like $5K max for those miles, I would guess). So don't think of it as an investment or anything.

And I guess you'll need to buy that little S that the PO probably kept as a trophy from automotion.com or somewhere (~$25).

Well doesn't seem like I will be buying it to keep it but, would I be able to sell it for more than 1500 if it ran?

depends on the car. Guy up the street bought his because the PO said the lifters were ticking and he didnt want to mess w/ it. I listened to it and predicted the end of the tensioner pad. Pulled the valve cover and the pad was gone- chain was riding on the tensioner piston! $400 for a tensioner plus a chain, pad, belts and rollers- runs great now. If the car is nice enough thats a killer price but i would check everything out before or after you buy it.
