Clarks Garage has a writeup on removing the handles. I never have been able to put the handle back on without removing the door panel and taking out the rear window track(which is very simple). It will save you a lot of misery to remove the panel IMO.

Hi Paul,
It's pretty well explained in http://www.clarks-garage.com. If you have Haynes manual, it's also explained with photos.
Once you get the handle off, you will see what's broken and how to replace the linkage. If you get stuck, post a few pics of what you've got so we can help you better.

When you go to put the handle back on, it is easiest to do it with the door panel off. There is a black metal cover/plate that covers up most of the handle that is attached with 3 8mm bolts. If you remove those the plate will be out of your way and you can access the handle more from inside the door. You may also have to remove the rear window track which is held in place by that plate and also another 8mm bolt at the bottom of the track. I don't think any of that is explained on clarks-garage but it is very handy.

Now the door handle it self is broke! Ugh,Does anyone have a spare handle, drivers side for a 85.5 944?
The little tab that the tension pin pivots was also fatigued,1st shut of the door the piece broke, another week to find and get parts.
If any one has a part please post and or pm.It would be great if someone local has a handle i could pick up.But ANYONE please pm me I want to finish up this repair!

Okay I found a picture of the part on Pelican Parts. The last couple of handles I have seen break, it was the triangular pivot piece on the end of the rod. To repair it all you have to do is remove the handle from the door and remove the tension pin that it pivots on and put the new part in.

Pelican description says 85.5 onward, but it fits an early just fine. The only differences I could see was the hole for the roll pin (which mine came out easily) is a different size on one side of the new linkage.
A simple matter of enlarging the hole ever so slightly, so the roll pin can slide in nice and snug.
installed and tested OK. Now I don't have to open my door from the passenger side or leave my window down for ease of interior door handle access on drivers side. Happy Chappy.
