Schenel Short Shifter wears OUT ! ! !
I have had this thing less than a year and the Hiem Joint is so worn that the whole thing is about to fall apart.
The Heim Joint is not corroded. The entire rest of the shift linkage has covering of rust but the joint itself is shiny clean.
I am in the process of replacing the linkage with a modified stock linkage that uses the Stuttgart Motorsports block. It is a block of aluminum that replaces the plastic part that has two holes drilled 90 degrees apart. These holes are farther apart than stock thus changing the geometry of the linkage to achieve the "shorter" throw.
In addition I am going to a Lindsey short Shift lever that Adjusts for height. I have discovered that the higher you can get the lever itself it seems to make the throw shorter, not a lot but some. I plan the cut the long top down to length once I get everything adjusted.
SO far the combination of these two has produced a throw that is not as short as the Schnel but also not as notchy or binding as the Schnel.
The long and short of it (no pun intended) is that the Schnel wore out WAY to quickly. It should have held up better than it did. The car has lived in North Carolina and Idaho so it has not been exposed to salt or bad weather either.

I have had one in my 944 for 3 years now. Not a single problem. In fact I really need another 1 for my 951. It feels wonkie compared to the Schnell.

I would go check it if I had one. there was no indication in the feel of shift that it was bad. The only reason I crawled under there was to measure it compared to the Stuttgart block and discovered the worn out joint.
I will get some pics this weekend.

Weird, i have one from 944Racing on my car. About 4 years old, 60k+ miles on it. Was on both my old 944 and now my 951. Same design as the Schnell. Had it off the car about two weeks ago, heim joint was still perfect.

I had a Weltmiester on my 87S and it never gave me any troubles. The Schnel was not as nice, from day one. I wonder if I just got a lemon?
Anyway, everything is all back together. There is one thing though, the shifter is all centered up and in Neutral, the gear shift springs back to center from the right side (5th and Reverse) easily. It tries to spring back from the left side (1st and 2nd) but does not quite make it.
Anyone know what is causing that?
