Default Alternator rebuilding service

Anyone know of a good place that rebuilds alternators for cars?

Thanks

Genikz and I just rebuilt one (well bearings anyway). I have the scars to prove it. Easily the most non-sexy, unrewarding work you can do on any car. What ever price you find, pay it.

Your local auto parts store should have rebuilt units.

My local auto store will not rebuild the alternator for me. I'm looking for a company that rebuilds all sorts of alternators for fair prices. My dealer quoted me over $600 for an alternator for our 00' BMW 740IL and rebuilt units run about $450. I think I can do better... will see..

Dan, Just search porsche 944 alternators in ebay motors parts and accessories. I just did a search and came up with at least five - all in the 100-185 range: http://motors.search.ebay.com/search...e=search&fgtp=

Alaska Electric Rebuilders on Van Horn Road does very good work at reasonable prices but they're a few thousand miles from you. Sorry I couldn't resist.

Just pull it apart and put in new brushes and bearings. The diodes usually don't fail so I wouldn't bother changing them. Just scribe the case before you crack it open so you can clock it correctly when you put it back together.

They don't rebuild them locally at the store. They have rebuilt units available and you give them your's as a core.

I don't mind shipping out. I will see if they have a website.

Chris,
That's funny that NAPA has them. I called them and asked, as I prefer NAPA over autozone and advance auto and he said "we don't carry parts for BMW", so I ended it at that, never even bothered with there website.

Thanks

There are local rebuilders in every major city in mostly every state, even our small town here in NC. Check the phonebook, or call small local repair shops. Chances are they know who does it nearby.

NAPA rebuilds have a poor reputation around here. Electrical systems really get a workout during the winter. Did I mention it's been 45 below zero that last few days?

I don't think Alaska Electric Rebuilders has a web site. Dimly lit shop, greasy plywood counter piled high with old alternators and starters, the two employees are the owners. They may have a computer but I wouldn't bet on it. There must be a shop closer to your location.

I don't know who, but I guarantee you there's a good shop in Lansing that can rebuild a Bosch alternator. Or check out Paragon, I think their rebuilts are under $200.

There is a place here in San Francisco that will rebuild any alternator or starter from any car. They are top notch, great service, fantastic work. They're not cheap but it's about the same as buying a rebuilt unit elsewhere. But your own unit gets rebuilt so there's no doubt if the unit you just bought will fit or not.

I don't know if this helps you at all since it's 2 time zones away... They're called Rite-Way Electric, http://www.rite-wayelectric.com/

Good luck.

True. There even was one in Louisville, KY when I lived there. Had them rebuild the alternator in my '83 for around $130 when a Bosch rebuilt was around $300. Look around in your area!

There isn't a alternator rebuild company in Lansing that I could find in the phone book. I'm going to call some garages and see who they use..
