I pushed the TT as far back as possible to the point where the tabs lined up with the axles. I recommend this because it gives you more space to work with when removing the FW.

Well, I hope you have the transmission out already along with the shifter and shifter rod to trans along with the exhaust hangers. If you have that done, move the torque tube back after rotating 180 degrees and push that torque tube all the way back. Then remove all pressure plate bolts and that thing will pretty much fall straight down and make sure it doesn't come down on your face as it weighs about 40 pounds or more.

I didn't realize the engine was still in the car for this, i just assumed it was out since thats where i was when i hit that bell housing snag (obviously everyone must have done it the same way as me right?). Since it was in my method of hitting it from the top might have not been practical, don't remember if you can get to that hole easily with the engine in. Sorry for that.

I don't have experience with your current problem, so i can't offer much help, good luck though.

It's most common to do the job with the engine in the car. Well, that's how I did it both times.

Hey, I have noticed that on my 88 944, the sensors have a separate housing that can prevent the bellhousing from coming off, that my earlier cars didn't (85.5 and 84). The sensor housing had 2 rods that went into the engine side. I believe. They were redundant since the housing is held on with bolts anyway, so I took the angle grinder to them and that was that.

My first time, I didn't have the shifter off and had a hell of a time getting the TT to spin. The shifter eventually popped off, but luckily sustained no damage.

The grinder trick is great especially if you are keeping the car for a while. I always grind that part of the bellhousing off if anything out of spite for the retarded Porsche engineers who designed it. Its caused many people headaches as I have seen people break the wires trying to pull the sensor out, break the head off the sensor destroying it completely, break bracket set screws, etc. Its one of the main reasons along with the rubber donut center clutch that convinced me that these idiots didn't know what they were doing therefore not to take what they say as word of god. After you see enough of these design blunders (compare a 928 clutch to a much inferior 944 clutch design to remove/replace), it takes away that "porsche mystique" very fast.

Yea i know that. I have my engine out for other reasons, and i just assumed that since i had it out, he must have it out. Chalk one up for why you shouldn't assume.

oh and the part in parenthesis was sarcasm, i know the internet doesn't portray that well.

Chris, no worries.

Cone_eater, the sensors are called speed and reference sensors. They are both the same part number but one is for speed and one is for reference. Paragon has it cheap:

Finished sliding back the t-tube and pulled the bell-housing off!!! Finally! I rotated the throw-out and man does it squall and grind... It does have a great SACHS pressure plate and disk!
Now for the bad news....
Brace yourself, I broke the housing the sensor goes into. Damn. Now what? Does anyone have one off a parts car or lying around?
Thanks for all the help!
