It shouldn't be hanging out, right? I wonder why it is, and where it needs to be?

Thanks,

Nick

Just get under there and poke at it. If it's an animal, yank it out and toss it in the trash (but take more pics first, we like pics!!!). If it's insulation, tuck it back up where it belongs.

Welcome, by the way. At least your first post is entertaining!

What you are seeing is the fiberglass heat shield that has deteriorated. It is there on the firewall all the way down to the floor of the car to keep heat from the exhaust getting into the car through the firewall.

The reason it looks the way it does, is because the reflective foil like material has deteriorated and come off. It will NOT hurt anything to leave it the way it is, but DO NOT touch it with bare skin, unless you want to itch because it is fiber glass.....

That's fiberglass, dude. Cut the loose bits away with scissors.

You can't believe how glad I am to hear that this is fiberglass. My wife thought it was one hellacious mouse nest, because it didn't stink.

Thanks for the rennlist.com welcome. I appreciate it.

That fiberglass won't rot out for another 20 years.

20 years? More like 20,000!

Seriously, though, I couldn't help but notice my 944 has no insulation at all ... the underbody just looks to have been sprayed with some grayish tar-like stuff. Should there be proper insulation under there?
