Default Exhaust

I have two places:
FABSPEED.COM 3" exhaust for the N/A
LindseyRacing.com 3" exhaust
I run the Lindsey Racing 4" straight through no cat on my turbo

+1! I don't care what you do with the intake & exhaust -- a 4 cyl motor, no matter what marque, just doesn't have the deep grumble of a V8.

Now I've heard some nice exhaust notes from some 911 racecars, but when it comes to a symphony of exhaust sounds, ya really need a V8. Folks here may not like the Ford Mustang, but IMHO, it's got one of the most distinct and good sounding exhaust notes found on production cars.

I think it's a YMMV situation. My 4 cylinder 944 NA has a kick-*** exhaust note. I wasn't lying earlier ... just putt-putting through my parking garage I set off car alarms. Partly due to the acoustics of an underground lot, no doubt, but I sure don't hear any other car doing that.

I am wondering something, though ... will it make a difference to drill a couple of discreet holes in the pipe? Maybe just before the muffler? Or would that result in fume-related brain damage and/or death?

Nothing is more subjective than sound. On this thread I've heard systems that I love and systems that I hate.

I would not drill holes. You will either risk adding a nasty hiss sound, or you will introduce oxygen at the wrong time and create a nasty backfire (which will set off alarms). If you're happy with it, why change. And yes, you could also be risking in-car fumes, but that seems pretty low risk.

My dad came and looked at the engine when the head was off, said it looked like the inside of the engine in his old '69 mach 1 mustang. Which makes sense, 2.5L 4 cylinder, double the cylinders, 5L V8, about the right size.

I'm surprised by the stock exhaust tone on these cars, much deeper than I'd expect from a 4 cylinder. Although that might be due to all the fart cannon equipped cars running around this city distorting my expectations of what a normal car sounds like.

Fabspeed only sells Turbo exhaust systems, none for the NA.
Id like to see a video of a NA without a muffler and some MSDS Headers, or just without a muffler.

I have a Fordahl header and 3" exhaust setup. The day I put it on, it sounded better and I gained 1 second a lap here in Portland. That is real and meaningful improvement compared to my previous 2.5" custom system.

part of it has to do with the 4-2-1 headers. most hondas etc have 4-1 log manifolds. even the performance headers are 4-1, muddles the sound together.
