Sunroof delete is not necessarily better. The sunroof cars had reinforced roof sections to make up for the lost sheetmetal. My 83 saved my life when a tree fell on us.

It wasn't due to popularity but rather Porsche's different pricing policy in Europe versus in the U.S.

In the '80s and even today to a certain degree, German and many European automakers' MSRP got you a bare-bones version that would've been unacceptable for U.S. customers. Everything extra added significantly to the base price. This included features that came standard on PCNA cars such as sunroof, power windows and A/C.

Porsche adapted to the North American market realizing that customers there were accustomed to domestic and Japanese cars that came "loaded" for the MSRP.

Not the case in Europe, which is why you find so many 944s without sunroof, power windows or A/C.

All dealers make the most money from there parts and service departments for the first 10 years of the cars life as well. So the more stuff in the car the more to go wrong, wear and need fixing or replacing! Which means $$$$
